Cecil McDermott
WEST POINT – Cecil Erwin McDermott, 91, passed away on Monday, April 30, 2012, at Dugan Memorial Home in West Point. Mrs. McDermottwas born July 29, 1920, in West Point to the late Ethel Peteet and John Cecil Erwin. Mrs. McDermott graduated from Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe, Mo. She was the Selective Service clerk in West Point for 23 years and was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Mrs. McDermott married Gerald Francis McDermott on Nov. 15, 1969, in West Point. He preceded her in death on April 6, 2004.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank Mrs. McDermott’s devoted caregivers, Jeannett Smith and Mary Westbrook, and the caring staff at Dugan Memorial Home.
Funeral services will be Saturday, May 5, 2012, at 10 a.m. from Calvert Funeral Home Chapel with Father Robert Dore officiating, and assisted by Lay Ecclesial Minister Loretta Duquette. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in West Point. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include her daughter, Emily Gay Bolich (Adrian Dale) of Hawthorne, N.J.; her stepson, Ted McDermott (Mary Beth) of Ooltewah, Tenn.; three grandsons, John Bolich Jr. of Warwick, N.Y., Geoffrey Bolich of Ringwood, N.J., and Sean McDermott of Seymour, Tenn.; four great-grandchildren; three nieces, Ann Miller Ross of West Point, Thomasine Miller Blankenship of Plano, Texas, and Sarah Hilliard Mirjanich of Miami, Okla.
In addition to her parents and husband, those preceding her in death were her sisters, Ethel Marvin Miller and Elizabeth Hilliard, and her stepdaughter, Mary McDermott.
Pallbearers will be Luke Lummus, Joey Michel, John Caskey, Paul Caskey, Phillip Dimino, Joe Ed Waldrep and Cole Knighton.
Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. with a Rosary service beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Calvert Funeral Home.

VARDAMAN – Yuridia Pachecano, 4, died Friday, April 27, 2012, at Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center in Memphis. He was born Jan. 12, 2008, in Amory.
Services will be at 5 p.m. Friday at Parker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Vardaman with Father Lorenzo Aju officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery at Vardaman.
Survivors include his mother, Maria Guadalupe Gutierrez of Vardaman; his father, Ansony Pachecano of Cerritos, San Luis Potosi; a brother, Tomas De Jesus Pachecano of Vardaman; his grandparents, Felipe Gutierrez of Vardaman, and Federica Ganzalez, Brigido Pachecano and Silvia Murillo, all of Cerritos, San Luis Potosi.
Pallbearers will be Jesus Gonzalez, Felipe Gutierrez, Fidel Gonzalez and Roman Gonzalez.

TUPELO – Ryland K’Mauri Sykes, 4-week-old infant son of Dionte Sykes and Dakota Kimble, died Monday, April 23, 2012, at the North Mississippi Medical Center Women’s Center. Arrangements will be announced later by Lee Memorial Funeral Home.

PRAIRIE – Felisha Starks, 28, died Thursday, April 26, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Union Baptist Church at Prairie with the Rev. Mike Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Union Baptist Cemetery in Clay County. Belle Memorial Funeral Home of Aberdeen is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, Michael Starks; two daughters, Destiny Fields and Shadiajh Starks; her father, Willie Fields, and her mother; Mattie Fields; one brother, William Joe Fields; and two sisters, Melisa Fields and Willie Jean Heard.
She was preceded in death by Jimmy Ray Fields.

Helen Brown
ECRU – Helen Weldon Brown, 60, died Monday, April 30, 2012, at her home. She was born on May 7, 1951, in Quitman County to Major and Estelle Mooneyham Weldon. She married Gerald Brown on Oct. 5, 1938. A Christian, she attended Buchanan Baptist Church in the Buchanan community.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Buchanan Baptist Church with Bro. David Westmoreland officiating. Burial will follow in the Buchanan Cemetery. Tutor Memorial Funeral Home of Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband of 26 years, Gerald Brown; three daughters, Kathy Gregory of Petal, Patci Gregory and Nancy Gregory Parker (Jeremy), all of New Augusta; two grandchildren, Austin and Evans Parker of New Augusta; two stepsons, Len and Brian Brown of Pontotoc; four sisters, Jeanette Goss (James) and Nell Winstead, both of Greenwood, Ruth Ann Croft (Wayne) of Thaxton and Sue Aaron (J.C.) of Randolph; three brothers, Joe Weldon (Bobbie) of Buckhorn, Robert Weldon (Wilda) of Lawrenceburg, Tenn., and Pete Weldon (Angie) of Bruce; several sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Estelle and Major Weldon; one niece, Debbie Aaron Goree; one nephew, Joey Slayton; and two brothers-in-law, Mike Dykes and Jessie Winstead.
Pallbearers will be nephews, Gerald Nobles, Eric Waits, Mike Smith, Scott Rager, Ronnie Cooper and Jake Weldon.
Visitation will be at the church from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday.

RIPLEY – Robert Ray Holmes, 63, died Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at his home.

Dot Beatty
WEST POINT – Ruby Gibson “Dot” Beatty, 79, died Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at Dogwood Forest Assisted Living Facility in Gainesville, Ga. She was born Feb. 5, 1933, in Columbus to Lida Bell Lollar and Linwood Gibson. She was a case worker with Clay County Welfare Department for 10 years and was a member of First Baptist Church in West Point. She lived in Clay County and West Point since 1956. She married Lennis Beatty on Dec. 29, 1951, in Columbus. He preceded her in death on Oct. 4, 2007.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Calvert Funeral Home Chapel in West Point with the Rev. Dale Funderburg officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Garden Cemetery in Columbus. Calvert Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, Lennis Henry Beatty (Leslie) of Cordova, Tenn., and Michael Tyrone Beatty (Lisa) of Gainesville, Ga.; three grandsons and one great-granddaughter; one sister, Lois McCullough of Columbus

CHEROKEE, Ala. – Richard “Bruno” Hodges, 88, died Monday, April 30, 2012.

William Southern Jr.
WEST POINT – William Vernon Southern Jr., 90, died Tuesday, May1, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point. He was born June 27, 1921, in Clay County to Valena Yeary and William Southern. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was employed at Babcock and Wilcox and later owned and operated Southern’s Grocery. He enjoyed working in his shop and garden.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Greenwood Cemetery with Dr. James Towery officiating. Robinson Funeral Home of West Point is in charge of the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Mary Helen Southern; daughters, Peggy Hawkins (James) and Marty Friend; son-in-law, Bob Gates; grandchildren, Debbie Smith (Mike), Susan Griffin (Don), Amy Carroll (Ray), Holly Nelsen (Thad), Mary Heather Gibbs (Frank), Will Friend (Carrie), Fleming Rogers (John); 17 great-grandchildren; niece, Velma Caskey.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Patricia Southern Gates; brothers, Herman Henry and Charles Southern; and sisters, Rena Mae Gartin and Beulah Smith.
Visitation will be from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

BALDWYN – Larry David Pannell, 67, died Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at his home in the Dry Creek community. He worked for Hay’s Construction and the 4th District in Tippah County. He was a member of Dry Creek Baptist Church, and he attended Concord Baptist Church. He enjoyed rabbit hunting.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Waters Funeral Home in Baldwyn with Bro. Robert Walker and Bro. Earl Barron officiating. Burial will be in Pratt Cemetery. Waters Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Brenda Davidson Pannell of Dry Creek; three sons, Derrick Pannell (Pam), David “Redd” Pannell (Pam) and Charles “Boo” Pannell (Sonya), all of Dry creek; three sisters, Betty Duncan of Dry Creek, Ruby Bennett of Blackland and Mary Nell Kennedy (Gary) of Booneville; five grandchildren, Brandi Pannell, T.J. Pannell (Lisa), Ivan Pannell, Haley Fordham and Jamie Pannell; two great-grandchildren, Connor Moore and Trevor Pannell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Ruby Elder Pannell; one brother, Benny Pannell; one sister, Dell Farris; his in-laws, Trammol and Jennie Davidson; two brothers-in-law, Henry Davidson and Floyd Bennett.

NEW ALBANY – Sammie Lee Hooper, 82, died Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at Graceland Care Center in New Albany. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home of Pontotoc.
Sara Underwood
NEW ALBANY – Sara Kathleen White Underwood, 93, died Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at her residence. She was born July 13, 1918, in Tippah County to Robert Clarence White and Mary Kitchens White. She was a 1936 graduate of Daniel High School, and a 1941 graduate of MSCW. During World War II she worked for TVA. She taught school for 26 years, 23 of which were in Humphreys County. She and her husband of 48 years, Bee Underwood, retired to the family farm in New Albany in 1977.
As an active member of the New Albany First United Methodist Church, she belonged to the Hill-Sharp Sunday School Class, served as secretary of the United Methodist Women for 10 years, and served as the district secretary for four years. She was also a member of the Progressive Mother’s Club.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the New Albany First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Barry Male officiating. Burial will be in the New Albany City Cemetery. United Funeral Service in New Albany is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by three daughters, Harriet Turner of Nashville, Tenn., Sara Lovelace of Oxford and Jane Wiegartner (Brian) of New Albany; seven grandchildren, Dean Turner, Daphne Glaser (Chris), Leslie Turner, Dee Lovelace (Katie), Ken Lovelace (Hope), John Hogin Lovelace and Jason Wiegartner; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bee Underwood; her infant, son Bee Underwood Jr.; a grandchild, Samuel Robert Wiegartner; a sister, Juanita White Johnson; and a brother, Robert Clarence White Jr.
Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday in Wesley Hall at the church.
