Raymond Montgomery Sr.
PONTOTOC – Raymond Furr Montgomery Sr., 90, died Friday, May 3, 2013, at Sunshine Health Care.
He was a World War II Army Veteran, Private First Class Headquarters Battery – 109th Field Artillery Battalion Battles and Campaigns: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, Central Europe, Battle of the Bulge, Bastonge, Germany.
A recent found newpaper article from 1945 summaries Mr. Montgomery’s fight for his country: “Private first class Raymond F. Montgomery, son of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Montgomery, Pontotoc, is enroute home from the Eurpean Theatre of Operations with the veteran 28th :Bloddy Bucket” Division, which in eight months saw vicious combat action from Normandy’s hedgerows to the heart of the Reich. His unit left Germany July 5th for Camp Pittsburgh, an assembly area in France, and is homeward bound from there. After battling across Normandy, Pfc. Montgomery and his unit paraded through Paris, then went east through Belgium and Luxenbourg and smashed into the Siegfried Line and into Germany. It fought in Hurtgen Forest in November and in December caught the full force of the Ardennes offensive and later helped liberate Colmar in Alsace and drive to the Rhine. Pfc. Montgomery wears five battle stars on his FTO ribbon, has been awarded the Good Conduct Medal, his unit commended for beach landings and spearheading into Belgium. His wife is the former Sue McGee, of Houlka.”
He was retired from Kimberly Clark Corporation after 36 years of dedicated service. He was fond of saying that he was never late for work. He especially liked to remind his three sons of his punctuality. He was a former Sunday school teacher at Leawood Baptist Churchin Memphis, Tenn.
Service is at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Tutor Memorial Funeral Home with Dr. Ken Hester officiating. Interment is at Pontotoc City Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Mary Sue Montgomery; children, Raymond F. Montgomery Jr. (Oleta), W. Herbert Montgomery (Diane) and James D. Montgomery (Eileen); grandchildren, Monty Montgomery, Marty Montgomery, Barry Montgomery, Kevin Montgomery, Trevor Schlafer, Lee Montgomery, Tonya Montgomery, Tallie Montgomery and Dan Ostenski; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by brother, Mack Montgomery; parents, Mary Illa Montgomery and Victor Barron Montgomery.
Pallbearers are Mike Montgomery, Kevin Montgomery, Barry Montgomery, Monty Montgomery, Lee Montgomery and Trevor Schlafer.
Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Syble Southern
BOONEVILLE – Syble Evon Southern, 79, died Saturday, May 4, 2013, at her residence. She was born Dec. 29, 1933, to Isaac and Lois Tennyson. She was a LPN at Baptist Memorial Hospital. She was a member of First Pentecostal Church.
Services will be at 3 p.m. today at McMillan Funeral Home with Bro. Jerry Wallace officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Memorial Park.
She is survived by her husband, James S. Southern; one daughter, Darlene (Sidney) Nicholson; two sons James Gary and Brian Southern; and one sister, Novalee Grimes, all of Booneville.
She is preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Reba Barron, Vernice Bishop and Edna Lovell; and two brothers, J.W. and Coleman Tennyson.

Mary Alexander
ODENVILLE, Ala. – Mary R. Alexander, 87, formerly of Amory, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2013, at Trinity Medical Center in Birmingham, Ala. Born on March 9, 1926, in Monroe County, she was a daughter of James Foster and Annie Ethel Robertson. She was a loving wife, mother and a cherished “Grandma” and “Memaw” and her heart was filled with kindness and compassion to all that knew her. She lived her life to the fullest and never lost her sense of humor and her love and laughter will be etched in our hearts forever.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home. A committal service with inturnment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Aberdeen.
She is survived by her son, Bobby (Faye) Jordan of Amory; her daughters, Rita (Jim) Long of Lantana, Texas, and Anne (Joe) Giada of Birmingham, Ala.; her grandchildren, Jim (Stephanie) Long, Jennifer (Chris) Adams, Jeff Long, Foster Jordan, Blake (Toni) Jordan, Ashley Giada and Jordan Giada; and her great grandchildren, Ivy Adams, Rosie Adams, Lacie Long, Parker Jordan and Devon Dykes.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard Alexander; her sisters, Dorothy (Dot) Brown and Ordean (Dean) Moffett; and her brother, Dayton Burren Robertson.
Visitation is 2 p.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home.

GORE SPRINGS – Virginia Lynn “Ivy” Winter, 50, died Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at her residence. She was born July 24, 1962, in Bruce, to L. Ivy and Bulin Timms Ivy. She was a homemaker.
Service is at 10 a.m. Monday at Parker Memorial Funeral Home with Bro. Truman Scarbrough officiating. Interment is at Bruce Cemetery.
She is survived by one son, Jonathan Winter (friend, Mandy Anthony) of Big Creek; two stepdaughters, Miracle Dunn of Tupelo and Katie Dunn of Tupelo; half-sister, Joy Ivy of Bruce; stepmother, Annette Ivy of Bruce; three grandchildren, Anna Belle Katherine Yelverton, Alicia J. Yelverton and Adain Lane Yelverton; and lifelong friend, Allen Dunn of Gore Springs.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Pallbearers are Hunter Bailey, Joey Fleming, Chris Flowers, Steve Frennis, Tim Frasier, Chris Spencer, Shane Webster and David Winter.

Julie Pope
ABERDEEN – Julie Kay Pope, 46, died Friday, May 3, 2013, at her residence. She was born Dec. 18, 1966, in Waukegan, Ill., to Betty Gann Brewer and the late Donald Lee Booton. She graduated from Hatley High School with honors in 1983. She was of the Baptist faith. She loved spending time with her family, especially her nieces and nephews. She enjoyed listening to music on radio and had a knack for winning prizes, surprising her family with gifts and taking care of her cat.
She is survived by her mother, Betty Brewer of Wren; sister, Teresa Phelps (Roger) of Wren; brother, Anthony Booton (Rita) of Aberdeen; nieces and nephews, Christy Norton, Tasha, Tabitha and T.J. Booton; and great-nieces and nephews, Tara Booton, Talea Hogan, Ava Norton, Tatum Booton, Cora and Ian Carter.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her nephew, Daniel Norton.
A celebration of life service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home with Bro. Robert Fowlkes officiating.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Allred, Roger Phelps, Toby Rhinehart, Ronnie Jones, Donald Jones and T.J. Booton.

Jean Christian
TUPELO – Jean Christian, 85, died Saturday, May 4, 2013, at her home. She was born Jan. 22, 1928, in Tupelo, to Berle and Manell Horton Summers. She was a graduate of Milam High School in Tupelo. She retired from First National Bank after working 35 years in accounting and also retired from McRae’s Dept. Store in customer service after 25 years of service. She was a homemaker and beloved mother of three. She was a member of Auburn Baptist Church.
Stateroom services will be at 2 p.m. today at W.E. Pegues in Tupelo, with Dr. Forrest Sheffield officiating. Burial will be in Auburn Cemetery.
Survivors include her daughter, Chris Murphy of Tupelo; three granddaughters, Michelle Rosen (Ralph) of Olive Branch, Melissa Murphy (fiancé, Chris Sanders) of Tupelo and Crystal Threadgill (Kalem) of Birmingham, Ala.; and seven great-grandchildren, Justin, Meredith, Brent and Jonathan Rosen, Jacquelyn Gillean, Gabe Sanders and Ben Threadgill.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, John Elzy Christian; and her twin sons, Barry and Barney Christian.

She is survived by her husband, Gerardo Dominguez of Blue Mountain; one daughter, Kymberlee Ina Dominguez of Blue Mountain; her parents, Cindy Yopp (Bryan) of Ripley and David Street (Kathy) of Blue Mountain; two sisters, Charity Hope Butler of Pontotoc and Kristie Kay Barnes (Mack) of Dry Creek Community; one brother, Jeffrey Butler (Ashley) of Blue Mountain; and her grandmother, Judy Sappington.
She was preceded in death by grandparents, Kenny Sappington, Arthur Brown Street and Ina Vay Street.
Pallbearers will be David Bedge, Ray Wilbanks, Mark Wilbanks, Dale Harrell, Ricky Boggs, Martin Chemilo and Roscoe Watkins.

He was a farmer, former Mason Big Creek Lodge, former Farm Beurea Board Member, Former Member of Gore Spring Gin Board and was a member of Big Creek Baptist Church.
