Louise Hutchens

POTTS CAMP – Lottie Louise Hutchens, 89, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County in New Albany. She was born Dec. 10, 1923, in Union County to Roy Butler and Madie Hudson Butler. She was a member of Bethlehem Church of the Lord Jesus Christ and a homemaker.

Services will be 11 a.m. today, Oct. 1, at the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ with Bro. Steve Wilson and Bro. Jon Vasquez officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Holly Springs Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include three sons, Buford Hutchens of Conway, Ark., Faron Hutchens of Potts Camp and Kenneth Hutchens of Hickory Flat; four daughters, Lavon Owens of Saucier, Virginia McCallen of Hickory Flat, Denise Hamby of Lakeland, Tenn. and Lynda Williams of Potts Camp; one brother, Ezra Butler of Myrtle; two sisters, Velma Patterson of Hickory Flat and Shirley Wiseman of New Albany; 27 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Hutchens; one son, Chester E. “Peewee” Hutchens; one daughter, Katherine Stroud; grandchildren, Heather Hutchens, Tina Hudson, Lee Warrington and Stewart Howell; daughter-in-law, Maralyn Hutchens; and son-in-law, James Williams.

Gussie Lou Bass

DORSEY – Gussie Lou Hardy Bass, 83, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, at Graceland in New Albany, where she resided the past eight months. She was born July 16, 1930, in Mooreville to Denville Coleman Hardy and Evie Lou Clark. During her younger adult years, she and her late husband, Joseph Bass, lived in Chicago, where she worked for Bell and Howell Corp. for more than 20 years. Upon returning to Northeast Mississippi, she lived in Dorsey and worked as a greeter for Walmart before her health failed. She loved conversation with everyone she met and especially her friends at Daniel Assisted Living in Fulton, where she lived for three years. She enjoyed reading and spending time with her beloved family, grandbabies, nieces, and nephews, as well as the company of her pet dog, Beau. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

A celebration of life service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, in Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with Bro. Kevin Clayton and Bro. Tracy McMillen officiating. Burial will follow in Andrews Chapel Cemetery in Mooreville. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to service time Wednesday.

Survivors include two sisters, Jenean Smith (Robert) and Ginger Odom, all of Mooreville; two granddaughters, Lisa Christian (David) of Dorsey and Brandi Henley (Wade) of Pontotoc; seven great-grandchildren, Morgan Christian, Philip Christian, Neely Christian, Chase Henley, Gracie Henley, Hunter Henley and Collin Henley; two nephews, John Smith (Mandy) and Weston Smith, and one niece, Tawnya Langley (Jeff), and their families.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a sister, Opal Dulaney; and three sons, Joe Glen Bass Jr. (1970), Robert Bass (1977) and Steve Bass (1976).

Pallbearers will be John Smith, Wade Henley, David Christian, Philip Christian, Barry Jenkins, Weston Smith and Robert Smith.

Eltis Murphree

HOULKA – Eltis Murphree, 76, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, at V.A. Medical Center in Memphis. He was born Sept. 1, 1937, in Calhoun County. He was a retired farmer. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1958 until 1962.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. today, Oct. 1, at Rocky Mt. Cemetery at Pittsboro. Bro. Robert Earl Alexander will officiate. Burial will follow. Parker Memorial Funeral Home of Bruce is in charge of arrangements.

He is survived by three brothers, Morris (Jean) Murphree of Olive Branch, J.D. (Martha) Murphree of Houlka and Gayron (Patsy) Murphree of Pope.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde Wilson Murphree and Ludie Porter Murphree; two brothers, Prentiss Murphree and Dennis Murphree; and one sister, Bernice Murphree.

Pallbearers will be W.R. Hensley, Danny Murphree, Jesse Murphree, Terry Murphree, Glenn Parker and Jim Taylor.

Mary Phillips

OXFORD – Mary Elizabeth Singletary Phillips, 90, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2013, at Baptist Memorial Hospital – North Mississippi in Oxford.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, in Chapel of Waller Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Inmon and Dr. David Ard officiating. Burial will follow in Shiloh Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon until service time Wednesday.

A homemaker, she also worked with her husband in their business, Phillip’s Oil & Gas Co. She was active at Bellevue Baptist Church and Shiloh Baptist Church. She loved hearing God’s word and gospel music and found great joy in gardening, growing flowers, tending animals and cooking for her family.

She is survived by her husband of 75 years, Roy N. Phillips of Oxford; a daughter, Rosalyn Pickens (Lamar) of Oxford; two sons, David Phillips (Judy) and Tommy Phillips (Faye), all of Oxford; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Floyd and Hattie Lee Chilcoat Singletary.

Leonard Hawkins

PONTOTOC – Leonard Marcus Hawkins, 88, passed away Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was a resident of Pontotoc for 49 years. He was a farmer and a lathe operator. He was a loving husband and the world’s best father.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today, Oct. 1, at Tutor Memorial Funeral Home in Pontotoc. Bro. Keith Benefield will officiate. Burial will be in the Ecru Cemetery. Tutor Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Frances Dale Russell Hawkins; two daughters, Pam Harkness and Melessa Neel; grandchildren, Bryan and Tina Harkness, Chris Harkness, Amy and Dwight Norwood, Benji Neel, Andrew Neel and Nichole Street; nine great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.

Mack Johnson

WALNUT – Mack Arthur Johnson, 73, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, at Magnolia Regional Health Center in Corinth. He was born Oct. 20, 1939, in Corinth to Arthur Lagrone and Sarah Virginia Pulliam Johnson. He was the owner of Johnson Lumber Company for 50 years. He served the Town of Walnut as an alderman for 24 years. He was a member of the Walnut Volunteer Fire Department for 50 years. He was an active member of Walnut Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today, Oct. 1, at McBride Funeral Home Chapel in Ripley. Bro. Carl Weeden, Bro. Danny Allen and Bro. Butch Weatherly will officiate. Burial will be in Harmony Cemetery at Walnut. McBride Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Danna Rose Hines Johnson of Walnut; two daughters, Vicki Skinner (Joe) and Jennifer Braddock, both of Walnut; three sisters, Lynda Hurt (Bob) of Memphis, Carol Smith (Travis) of Walnut and Lisa Mitchell (Bo) of Kossuth; six grandchildren, Meghan Street (Clint), Stacy, Joel and Jeff Skinner, Taylor and Macy Braddock, all of Walnut; and five great-grandchildren, Gracie Thrasher, Wyatt, Mattie, Daylen Rose and Cedar Mack Street, all of Walnut.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Bobbie J. Anderson

SOUTHAVEN – Bobbie J. Anderson died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at DeSoto Health Care Center in Southaven. She was born June 26, 1929. She was formerly of Houston. She was a retired civilian bookkeeper for the U.S. Air Force and an active member of Goodman Oaks Church of Christ in Southaven. She loved her many friends and her church family.

A graveside memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Houston. Southern Funeral Chapel in Houston is in charge of arrangements.

There were no immediate survivors.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Tidie Eugene Crew and Robbie Jacobs Crew; and her husband, Lenanrt J. “Andy” Anderson, who died Dec. 18, 2002.

WEST POINT – Mary Emma Price Smith, 85, died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, at West Point Community Living Center in West Point.

Martha Miller

BREWER – Martha Young Miller, 71, passed away Monday, Sept. 30, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center after an extended illness. She was born June 12, 1942, in Verona to Samuel Thomas and Betty Flora Pettigrew Young. She graduated from Shannon High School in 1962. She had been a longtime member of Brewer Baptist Church and was a current member of Oak Hill Baptist Church in Pontotoc. She enjoyed her plants and gardening. She cherished her friends and the countless hours spent talking to them. She adored her grandchildren and reserved a special place for them in her heart.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with the Rev. Marty Browning officiating. The eulogy will be given by family member Sheriff Jim Johnson with scripture by her only grandson, Logan Parker. A graveside will follow at Lee Memorial Park.

Survivors include her three children, Myra Collins (Bill) of Ecru, Lee Miller (Beth) of Tupelo and Melinda Parker (Ben) of Guntown; six grandchildren, Kayla and Kari Collins, Caroline Miller, Logan, Emilee and Madelyn Parker; two sisters, her identical twin, Mary Goff (Bobby) of Shannon and Patsy Bass (Lowery) of Tupelo; her brother, Joe Young of Plantersville; special friend, Sharon Minga of Brewer; and many special nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Flora Pettigrew Young and her sister, Sammie Burleson.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Joe Young, Jeff Goff, Ken McVay, Johnny Burleson, Scott Martin, Larry Bass and Guy Weeks.

Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Minga, Keith Wiseman, Mike Easley, Eddie McPherson, Joe Dye and Tommy Lindsey.
