Dale Stegall

PONTOTOC – Martha Dale Monagan Stegall, 75, went home to be with the Lord on Oct. 28, 2013, at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. She was born Dec. 24, 1937, to William Henderson “Red” Monagan and Mildred Blaylock Jones. She graduated from Tupelo High School and retired from the finance business after 40 years. She was a faithful member of Victory Baptist Church. She loved the Lord, her family and friends.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today, Oct. 31, 2013, at Tutor Memorial Funeral Home in Pontotoc. Bro. Doug Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Victory Baptist Church Cemetery. Tutor Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Pat Stegall; three sons, Mike Coker, David Coker (Barbara) and Eddie Stegall; daughter, Becky Stegall Niblett (Andy); a brother, Ray Monagan (Dorinda); 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother; her stepfather, George Jones; a sister, Sarah Joe Tackitt; and in-laws, Wade Sr. and Stacia Stegall.

Pallbearers will be Brian Coker, Ronny Coker, Randy Coker, Wiley Jackson, Trai Stegall and Matthew Stegall.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. today.

Helen Garner

BELMONT – Helen Payne Garner, 90, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, at Southern Magnolia Estates in Golden. She was born April 24, 1923, in Belmont. She was an employee of Blue Bell and a member of New Bethel Baptist Church.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today, Oct. 31, at New Bethel Baptist Church with Bro. Brian Weems and Bro. James Segars officiating. Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery. Deaton Funeral Home of Belmont will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are two children, Wayne Garner (Jamie) and Phyllis Garner Turner, all of Belmont; four grandchildren, Christy Garner Hughes (Rocky), Lana Dexter Murphree (Cliff), Lori Dexter Witt (Brad) and Barry Dexter; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Lela Credille of Belmont; son-in-law, Randy Dexter of Belmont; and special niece, Earlene Chumbley of Belmont.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Garner; her parents, Jake Payne and Rosie Lou Pruitt Payne; and her brothers and sisters, Aude Payne, Ora Johnson, Cora Moody, Ruby Sparks, Den Payne, Elvie Segars, Eula Brown, Alvin Payne, Vard Payne, Lala Cain, Artie Cook, Brooks Holcomb, Emma Bates and Verner Holcomb.

Pallbearers will be Cline Bates, Ronnie Cook, Randy Credille, Ricky Credille, Randy Dexter and Joe Chumbley.

Visitation will be until service time today at the church.

Paul M. Drewery

RIPLEY – Paul Martin Drewery, 61, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, at Tippah County Hospital. He was born Sept. 5, 1952, to Marshall and Leatrice Sheffer Drewery. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and a farmer.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today, Oct. 31, at Ripley Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jack Bennett officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

He is survived by one daughter, Lynn Shackelford (Stephen) of Ripley; one sister, Martha Jo Drewery; one brother, Douglas Drewery (Sherry) of Falkner; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Paul Curtis Drewery.

Pallbearers will be Jessie Jones, Eddie, Dusty and Jonathon Drewery, Joe Cross and Danny Childs. Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Griffin, Bobby Drewery and Harry Kitchens.

Buck Fondren

TAYLOR – Buck Fondren, 47, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis. He was born June 24, 1966, in Lafayette County to Mae P. Fondren and the late Willie B. Fondren. He attended Mt. Hope M.B. Church, where he was an active member of the Deacon Board. He attended Lafayette School System and graduated in May 1984. He attended Northwest Community College where he received a degree in heating and cooling in May 1997. He worked for Rebelaire for 15 years, then opened his own business, Fondren and Sons, in 2007. In his spare time he enjoyed football, hunting, spending time with his grandchildren and riding his motorcycle. On May 9, 1987, he married Phyllis Goolsby. They had three children.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at the T.O.M.B. Building in Oxford. Burial will be in Yocona Cemetery at Taylor. Serenity-Martin Funeral Home of Oxford is in charge of arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Fondren of Taylor; two sons, Zedrick Fondren and Jeremy Fondren, both of Taylor; one daughter, Phylisha Fondren of Taylor; an adopted son, Marquest Coleman; one grandson, Kaiden Fondren; one granddaughter, Aubree Fondren; his mother, Mae P. Fondren of Taylor; two sisters, Willie Mae (Charles) Woods of Oxford and Vickie Vaughn of Taylor; mother-in-law, Mattie (CW) Young; stepmother-in-law, Erma Goolsby; five sisters-in-law, five brothers-in-law; a godson, Kylan Egerson; a goddaughter, Nyanza Brown; and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Willie B. Fondren.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the T.O.M.B. Building.

Raymond Barksdale III

AMORY – Raymond D. Barksdale III, 55, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2013, in Amory. Born July 21, 1958, in Meridian, he was the son of Raymond and Walterine Beason Barksdale. He married Sharon McDonald in 1978. Graduating from Caldwell High School in Columbus, he attended Golden Triangle Vo-Tech. He was of the Baptist faith. He later moved to Amory, where he worked in the area furniture plants and had worked the last 18 years at Longhorn Steakhouse in Becker. He was a devoted and compassionate husband, father, grandfather and friend. He enjoyed family cookouts, spending time with his grandchildren, keeping up with friends and family on Facebook and working.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon Barksdale; daughter, Brandi Beckner (Steven) of Amory; sons, Eric Barksdale (Michelle) of Amory and Tyler Barksdale of Okolona; sister, Malinda Bivens (Harry) of Charlotte, N.C.; uncle, Eugene Barksdale (Agnes) of Hattiesburg; and grandchildren, Gracie Riggan, Skylar Barksdale, Nicky Muhlenbruch and Caden Barksdale.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Oct. 31, at E.E. Pickle Funeral with Bro. Shane Crawford officiating. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. at Vandiver Hollow Cemetery in Tuscumbia, Ala.

Pallbearers will be Joey and James McDonald, Dylan Welch, James Tank and Steven Beckner. Honorary pallbearers will be his co-workers at Longhorn Steakhouse.

Robert Newsum

CAIRO – Robert Gates “Bob” Newsum Jr., 99, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, in Shreveport, La. He was the oldest member of Cairo Baptist Church and a retired school bus driver with Itawamba Community College. He was a World War II Air Force veteran and was recognized last year at the Veterans Day program as the oldest Pontotoc County veteran in attendance. He was an avid Ole Miss football fan, enjoyed watching westerns, building things, gardening and growing roses and drinking coffee at the Huddle House.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at Cairo Baptist Church with the Rev. Milton Koon officiating. Burial will follow in the Ecru Cemetery. Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his son-in-law, Randell Koon of Ripley; three sisters, Eva Bailey (Bill) of Cairo, Vaneta Dowdy (Melvin) of Cairo and Dola Rorie of Tupelo; one sister-in-law, Audrey Newsum of Perkinston; three grandchildren, Jennifer Newsum Sims (Brian) of Toccopola, Melissa Koon of Shreveport, La., and Greg Newsum (Amanda) of New Albany; and seven great-grandchildren, Robert Yuriy Boudreaux, Bradley “Bobs” Boudreaux, Joshua Newsum, Megan Newsum, Andrew Newsum, Kendall Harrington and Evan Sims.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Gates Newsum Sr., and Resa Gates; his wife, Doris Newsum; a daughter, Glenda Newsum Koon; a son, Johnny Newsum; a grandson, Brad Koon; one sister, Hermie Lewis; and three brothers, Travis Newsum, Cody Newsum and Sam Newsum.

Pallbearers will be Mike Swords, Tim Holcomb, Billy Bailey, Arthur Koon, Larry Koon and Mar Alshargatis.

Visitation will be at Cairo Baptist Church from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday.

Jackie Hopkins

TUPELO – Jackie R. Hopkins, 62, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, at Sanctuary Hospice House. He was born in Red Bay, Ala., on Aug. 12, 1951, to Narvis D. and Florence Brock Hopkins. He served as shipping and receiving clerk for Super Sagless of Tupelo for 38 years with an impressive perfect attendance. Pressure washing and shooting pool with his friends were a few of his favorite hobbies. He loved spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. He attended the Church of God of Prophecy.

A celebration of life will be 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues. Burial will be in Eggville Cemetery.

Survivors include two children, Alisha Bryant (Andy) of Mooreville and Wesley Hopkins (Joan) of Amory; his companion, Pam Hester of Tupelo; brother-in-law, Herman Lansdell (Debbie) of Tupelo; extended family, Michael Hester (Monica) and their daughter, Peyton Kinley, Jonathan Glass of Mooreville, and John Paul Glass and his daughters, Leigha and Hanna, all of Mooreville; and grandchildren, Chapman Bryant and Anna Brooke Bryant, both of Mooreville, Summer Clark, Hayden Harris, Bradley Pannell, Randy Pannell (Heather) and their son, Ryan Pannell, Christie McKay (Chris) and their children, Savannah McKay and Christian McKay, and Rusty Pannell (Kate) and their son, David Pannell, all of Amory.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Sue Ann Lansdell.

Pallbearers will be Chapman Bryant, Michael Hester, Dennis Hutcherson, Ray Miller and his nephews, Mike and Kevin Lansdell.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Mann, Judy Shields, Jerry Harris, Steve Lansdell, all his pool shooting friends including the late David Duncan.

OXFORD – Maxine Evans Blackburn, 94, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, at Mississippi State Veterans Home in Oxford.

Dorothy Spight

RIPLEY – Dorothy Mae Hill Spight, 78, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, at Rest Haven Nursing Home in Ripley after a long illness. She was born Oct. 2, 1935, to Hannon and Beulah Knox Hill. She married Billy Wayne Spight on March 15, 1961. They had two children. She was a member of Ripley Second Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years. She retired from Ripley Middle School after working as a cook for several years. She enjoyed cooking, singing and helping others. She always took great joy in being asked to cook chicken and dressing for church events.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at Ripley Second Baptist Church with Pastor Willie Paine officiating. Burial will be in Academy Cemetery in Blue Mountain. Foster and Son Funeral Home of Ripley is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her daughter, CaSsandra (Jermaine) Jackson; her son, Oral Wayne Spight; four grandchildren, Lataiza Spight, Siarra Jackson, Orazion Spight, Zionia Sparkman of Ripley; six brothers-in-law, Henry (Frances) Spight of South Holland, Ill., Russell Spight of Sacramento, Calif., Richard Spight (Stephanie) of Anchorage, Alaska, Dennis Spight of Seattle, Wash., Lafronzell Spight and Larry Spight of Chicago; three sisters-in-law, Carolyn Spight Tadros and Vircy Hattis of Chicago and Mamie Hill of Texas; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and two brothers, Paul Edward Hill and Willie Morris Hill.

RIPLEY – Harvey Lee Mason, 57, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was born May 22, 1956, to Andy Lee Mason and Mary Ann Hodges.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at St. James Church of God in Christ with Superintendent Bernell Hoyle officiating. Burial will follow in Shiloh Church Cemetery in Ashland. Foster and Son Funeral Home of Ripley is in charge of arrangements.

Johnnie Joe Thornton

TUPELO – Johnnie Joe Thornton, 56, died Friday, Oct. 25, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center. He was born March 24, 1957, in Tupelo to Joseph Thornton and Ruby L. Hamilton Thornton. He was a member of New Lebanon M.B. Church in Tupelo. He loved being outdoors and enjoyed being with his family, especially his grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be at 1 p.m. today, Oct. 31, at the Springhill District Building in Tupelo with the Rev. Billy D. Rainey officiating. The Rev. Elisha Thomas will deliver the eulogy. Burial will follow at Big Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery. Grayson-Porter’s Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include one daughter, Shunda White, and one son, Jonathan (Latorya) Hunt, both of Tupelo; his father, Joseph Thornton of Tupelo; two brothers, Randy Thornton of Pontotoc and Rickey L. (Parker) Thornton of Nettleton; two sisters, Stephanie Thornton of Pontotoc and Willie Sue Bogan of Shannon; four grandsons, Jasper Hunt, Jonathan Hunt Jr., Jacquess White and Javontay Hunt; three granddaughters, Derrisha Hunt, Josslyn White and Dalaisha Hunt; special nieces, Diesha, Candace and Shumya Thornton; special nephews, Leonard and Christopher Thornton; and a host of uncles, aunts and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruby L. Thornton.

WALNUT – Oleta Ann Holley Dillinger, 79, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, at Magnolia Regional Medical Center in Corinth. She was born Jan. 7, 1934, to Ezra and Rettie Skinner Holley in Tippah County. She was retired from Genesco Manufacturing Co. with 30 years of service. She was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church. She and her husband, Willie, would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in December.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today, Oct. 31, at McBride Funeral Home Chapel in Ripley. The Rev. Brad Vuncannon and Bro. Marvin Robbins will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery at Chalybeate.

She is survived by her husband, Willie Dillinger Jr. of Walnut; two daughters, Patsy Flowers (Charlie) of Dumas and Brenda Voyles (Grady) of Walnut; two sons, Jackie Dillinger (Carolyn) and Jimmy Dillinger (Teresa), both of Walnut; one sister, Ara Hopper of Ripley; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Eva Hopper and Lucille Tomlinson; one daughter-in-law, Deborah Dillinger; one brother, J.B. Holley; and two grandchildren, Brandon and Brandie Dillinger.

Pallbearers will be David Voyles, Richard Still Sr., William Barr, Mike Drewery, Craig Settlemires and Roman Cornelius.

Honorary pallbearers will be her grandson, Kenneth Drewery; and her great-grandsons, Richard Still Jr., Josh Still, Reed Settlemires, Eric Johnson, Ian Tallant, Tyler Dickins, Peyton Donahue, Riley Butler, Blake Butler and Camden Voyles.
