Flake R. Fooshee
PONTOTOC – Flake R. Fooshee, 84, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Sunday, September 16, 2012, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was born in Randolph on June 3, 1928, to Melvin and Minnie Tutor Fooshee. He married the love of his life, Catherine Brummett on April, 24, 1965, and shared over 40 years together until her homegoing on February 8, 2006. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He was a Christian and a member of Carey Springs Baptist Church of Randolph. He loved his family, church family and had many friends. He enjoyed working in his garden and sharing his vegetables with his loved ones. He was a Mason for 50 + years. He served as MS State Representative from 1976-1980. He was a retired farmer and ASCS Field Reporter.
A Celebration of Life Service will be at Carey Springs Baptist Church in Randolph at 2:00 p.m. with Bro. David Poynor, Bro. Pete Gregory and Bro. Junior Ritchie officiating. Graveside service will follow at the Carey Springs Cemetery.
He leaves behind one son, Roger Fooshee (Dara); two daughters, Jennifer Scarbrough and Stephanie Inmon (Glen); one step-daughter, Glenda Tutor; 10 grandchildren, Maranda and Mallory Scarbrough, Katelyn and Kaylee Fooshee, Barron, Reed and Hayden Inmon, Greg and LaWayne Tutor, and Beverly Tutor Roye; one great-granddaughter, Emma Grace Robbins; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one sister, Gracie Killough; one brother, Robbie Ladale Fooshee ; and step-son-in-law, Ray Tutor.
Pallbearers to serve will be Ricky Miller, F.G. Tutor, Phil Adair, Barron Inmon, Marlin Inmon and Randy Tutor.
Honorary pallbearers will be Reed and Hayden Inmon.
Visitation will be Monday, Sept. 17, 2012, at Baldwin Nowell Funeral Home from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012, at Carey Springs Baptist Church from 1:00 p.m. until service time at 2:00 p.m.

Robert Taylor
ABERDEEN – Robert Irvin Taylor, 96, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, at Aurora Australis Lodge in Columbus. He was born Nov. 2, 1915, to Robert Graves Taylor and Mary Johnson Taylor in Athens. He was a graduate of Aberdeen High School and Chillicothe, Mo., Business College. He served in WWII as sergeant for Army Corp of Engineers. He was owner of Taylor’s General Merchandise for 39 years and then employed by Monroe Banking and Trust Company as public relations director for 7 1/2 years. At First Baptist Church of Aberdeen, he served as a deacon for 50 years, adult Sunday school director, and president of Keenagers. He was a former member of Rotary Club and Exchange Club, and a member of First Federal Savings and Loan Board. He served as a trustee for Monroe County Hospital and on the board for Golden Triangle Regional Medical Center Foundation. He was the vice president on a committee to reopen The Elkin Theatre, served as a host for the Pilgrimage at the Magnolias, and was elected as a treasurer for The American Red Cross where he worked on The Monroe County Fund Drive. He was a devoted attendee of the Shelaine Restaurant Men’s Coffee Group. He enjoyed lunches to various towns with the Romeo’s – Retired Old Men Eating Out.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church of Aberdeen with Bro. Roy McKay and Bro. R. D. Cline officiating. Burial will be in Oddfellows Rest Cemetery. Tisdale-Lann Memorial Funeral Home in Aberdeen will be in charge of the services.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Jo “Bobbie” Strawbridge (Bill) of Humble, Texas, and Bette Jane Rhea (Charlie) of Columbus; four grandchildren, Courtney Penland (Andy), Barry Rhea (Lauren), Doug Strawbridge (Jennifer, and Taylor Lane; five great-grandchildren, J.P. Pruett, Josh Penland, Charley Rhea, Caden Rhea, Elizabeth Rhea and London Lane; a dear friend, Connie Ellard; and faithful caregivers, Bobbie Henderson and Annette Jones.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Lottie Miller Taylor; and second wife, Marguerite Hunter Taylor.
Pallbearers will be Walter Lann, Ralph Bradley, Coy Flynn, Randy Nichols, Bob Plasco and Doc Taylor.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jesse Tate, Jim Bradley, Conwell Harris, Gordon Comer, Merle Walters, Fred Robinson, George Crawford, Chartos Nichols, Harold Long, James West, Thomas Pierce, Bob Miller, J. W. Benson, James L. House, George Luker, Dr. Arthur Brown, Dinny Rhea, Tim Ervin, Ronnie Boozer, Neal Hilliard, Howard Moon and Dr. Leonard Goodgame.

Johnny Merritt
BUCHANAN – Johnny Elwood Merritt, 63, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, at his home. He loved horse riding, hunting, spending time with family and friends, and playing guitar.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Buchanan Baptist Baptist Church with J.W. Owens and Joey Lee Swords officiating. Burial will be in Buchanan Cemetery. Tutor Memorial Funeral Home of Pontotoc is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include one son, Mike Merritt (Anita Bullock) of Ingomar; two daughters, Michelle Gray (Randy) and Deborah Merritt of Pontotoc; mother, Maxine Merritt; one brother, Jimmy Merritt (Agnes); two sisters, Ann Stegall (Dalton) and Sue Dillard (Charles) of Pontotoc; seven grandchildren, Michael Merritt, Brandon Merritt, Justin Gray, Summer Gray, Cody Mitchell, David Blystone, and Blake Stout; one great-grandchild, Harlee Merritt;and father-in-law, Harry Wood (Charmy).
He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Merritt; father, Jack Merritt; and mother-in-law, Eva Wood.
Pallbearers will be Michael Merritt, Cody Merritt, Tyler Cobb, David Blystone, Blake Stout and Justin Gray.
Honorary pallbearers will be Brandon Merritt, Lyon Dillard, Stacey Dillard, Johnny George and Leo Mask.

IUKA – Mary Jo Gross, 82, of Iuka, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, at Tish-omingo Community Living Center.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today at Cypress Grove Cemetery. Cutshall Funeral Home of Iuka is in charge of arrangements.

Billy Short
THAXTON – Billy J. Short, 80, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, at Sanctuary Hospice in Tupelo. He was born at his family home in Pontotoc County on Dec. 5, 1931.
He was a former resident of Memphis, where he was employed by Bruce Carton Company to produce printed paper goods. In the late 1960s, he moved his family back to the country near Thaxton to fulfill his dream of owning and operating a small farm. As a farmer, he produced various crops, garden produce, cattle and hay. He was best known in the region for the homemade sorghum molasses and English shepherd dogs that he raised and sold for years.
A graveside service to honor his life will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Sand Springs Cemetery in the Hurricane Community. Tutor Memorial Funeral Home of Pontotoc is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marjorie Snow Short; two sons, Billy H. Short (Betty) of Ingomar and Bobby J. Short (Pam) of Birmingham, Ala.; five grandchildren, John H. Short (Breck) of Lucedale, Beth Short of New Albany, Sara Short of Jonesboro, Ark., Nathan Short and Thomas Short, both of Birmingham, Ala.; and two brothers, Jimmy Short (Marty) of Walnut and Charles Jack Short (Edith) of Pontotoc.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ella and Hoyt Short of Thaxton; one brother, Robert Short of Thaxton; and one sister, Linda Short Harley of Memphis.

Tina Bullard
IUKA – Tina Bullard, 47, of Iuka, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, at Magnolia Regional Health Center in Corinth. She was a member of Mt. Evergreen United Methodist Church and formerly worked as a licensed practical nurse at Tishomingo Community Living Center.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cutshall Funeral Home Chapel in Iuka with the Rev. Robert Armstrong officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Evergree Cemetery. Cutshall Funeral Home of Iuka is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include her parents, Dora and Donnie Williams; one son, Zack Bullard; one daughter, Megan Bullard; two sisters, Vickie Wimberly and husband, Keith, and Kim Borden and husband, Galelus; two nieces, Madison and Molly Borden; and three nephews, Kyle, Keifer and Isaiah Wimberly, all of Iuka.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Frank and Star Mae Williams and Leroy and Lena White.
Pallbearers will be Galelus Borden, Keith Wimberly, Kyle Wimberly, Keifer Wimberly, Mark Killingsworth, Sydney Robinson, Todd Williams and PhilMoore.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Ann Cross
WINONA – Ann Grice Cross, 75, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, at Winona Manor. She was born in Baldwyn to Ruby and William Haygood. She was a registered nurse, working at Tyler Holmes Memorial Hospital and Grenada Lake Medical Center before her retirement. She was a member of New Hope Methodist Church in Winona.
Services will be at noon Wednesday at Lee Funeral Home in Winona with the Rev. Rusty Keen officiating. Burial will be in Winona Garden of Memory. Lee Funeral Home of Winona is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by her grandson, Brad Grice (Erin) of Flowood; sister, Virginia Duffy (Charles) of Guntown; and two daughters-in-law, Gail Grice of Ridgeland and Betty Grice of Winona.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and three sons, Gary Grice, Terry Grice and Jerry Grice.

HODGES, Ala. – Bonnie Beard, 80, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, at Generations of Red Bay.

Gavin Cushman Sr.
HOUSTON – Gavin Glannard Cush Cushman Sr., 92, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2012, at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. He was born March 17, 1920, in Scooba to Glenn Earl Cushman and Hester Lee Cushman. He was a WWII Army veteran of the European Theater. He was a retired auto mechanic for Patch Chevrolet and Patch Tractor.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Houston Funeral Home in Houston with the Rev. Terry Rhodes officiating. Burial will follow at Chickasaw Memorial Garden in Houston. Houston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his sons, Jimmy Glen and Joyce Cushman of Memphis, Billy and Adrienne Scruggs of Shreveport, La., and Gavin Jr. and Cheryl of Nesbit; sisters, Hestelle Sprouse of Baton Rouge, La., and Evelyn Sanders of Montery, La.; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Cushman on May 21, 2007; parents; and brothers, William and Lester Cushman.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Matt Cushman, Stephen Cushman, Andrew Cushman, Gavin Cushman III, Jeff Scruggs and Jeff Potter.

OAKLAND, Tenn. – Verlon Geneva Padgett, 100, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, at home. She was born Aug. 19, 1912, to John and Ida Cole Pippin. She was a member of New Hope Primitive Baptist Church, and she was a retired dietician for Shelby County Schools in Tennessee.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at McMillan Funeral Home with Elder Herman Clark and Elder Bennie Burcham officiating. Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery. McMillan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Martha (Charles) Littleton of Oakland, Tenn., and Sue Jean (Sam) Wood of Millington, Tenn.; two sons, John Gorden (Joan) Padgett of Mountain Home, Ark., and Donnie Ray (Clara) Padgett of Wetumpka, Ala.; one nephew, Dr. Randy (Holly) Pippin of Germantown, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 74 years, Gorden Bilbo Padgett; parents; one daughter, Eunice Yuvone Padgett; two brothers, Clyde and Eulous Pippin; and two great-grandsons, Hayden and Kyle Padgett.
