BOONEVILLE – Surrounded by his family, Obie T. Koon departed this earthly life on Wednesday, September 19, 2012, at his home after a lengthy illness. He was born August 27, 1925, in Prentiss County to Obie Roy and Carrie Mae Martin Koon. He attended Osborne Creek and Blackland Schools. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather who was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was a Baptist.
He willingly served his country during World War II by enlisting in the United States Coast Guard. He served as Radarman 3rd Class-aboard the USS Gordon, a transport carrier. He made several tours to the South Pacific and North Africa. After the war, he re-enlisted and was stationed in Panama City, Florida. After returning home to North Mississippi, he co-owned and operated Weeks & Koon Service Station. He was also a farmer not only working his acres but also helping neighbors and friends. Later he owned and operated Koon’s Texaco Station. He retired from DeVinney Construction Company.
In 1950, he married Zana Holland Smith, and they welcomed two children, Nelson and Susan. During Zana’s illness, he lovingly cared for her while working and raising two children. In 1965, he married Sis Downs, and they welcomed three children, Annett, Tyron and Roy. He loved his family and taught them by example.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Elizabeth “Sis” Koon; his five children, Nelson (Mary) Koon of Fulton, Susan Lambert, Annett (Steve) Treece, Tyron (Suzanne) Koon, and Roy (Leslie) Koon, all of Booneville; his grandchildren, Holly (Jim) Gray, Laura (Zac) Richardson, Bryson (Lauren) Lambert, Tyler Koon, Cody Koon, Trey Koon, Annabelle Bullard, and Davis Koon; seven great-grandchildren; and a special niece, Sandra (Phil) Purvis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Zana Holland Smith Koon in 1964; sisters, Virginia Koon Rowland and Lera Koon Rowland; and a son-in-law, Johnny Lambert.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 pm Saturday, September 22, 2012, at McMillan Funeral Home with Bro. Kerry Powell officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Memorial Park.
Visitation will be from 5-8 pm today and until service time on Saturday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Jim Gray, Zac Richardson, Bryson Lambert, Tyler Koon, Cody Koon, Trey Koon, and Davis Koon.

WEST POINT – Grady Berryhill, 89, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center, Tupelo. He was born Aug. 16, 1923, in Monroe County to Susan Head Berryhill and Wilford Franklin Berryhill. He was a mechanic having worked for Bryan Foods, Bishop Chevrolet, Jameson Ford, TXI and later in his own shop. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. Mr. Berryhill was a veteran of the U. S. Army Air Corps, where he was an aircraft mechanic during WWII.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. today at Calvert Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ben Butler officiating, assisted by the Rev. Sarah Windham. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in West Point.
Survivors include his wife, Jimmie Dell Caradine Berryhill; one daughter, Judy Buck (Thad); and his son-in-law, Tommy Simmons, all of West Point; four grandchildren, Terri Dukeminier (John), Kim Miller (Jeff), Scot Simmons (Brandy) and Kelli Brown (Jeremy); 13 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Eva Mae Williams of Columbus.
He was preceded in deaht by his daughter, Carolyn Berryhill Simmons; seven brothers; and one sister.
Pallbearers will be Scot Simmons, Jeff Miller, John Dukeminier, Jeremy Brown, Josh Miller and Joseph Miller.
Honorary pallbearers will be Harold Nyholm, Dr. John Cox, Dr. Andrew Kellum, Dr. Vishal Sachdev, all his wonderful caregivers, and the Members of Christ United Church Family.

BALDWYN – James L. Ragin, 52, died Sept. 19, 2012, at his home in Baldwyn. He was born July 29, 1960, in Prentiss County to J.W. Ragin and Luella Ragin. He attended Wheeler High School and was a member of Ruben-Chapel C.M.E. Church in Baldwyn. He worked at Adam’s Auto Sales for many years.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Agnew & Sons Funeral Home in Baldwyn with the Rev. Jonathan Bass officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Nebo Cemetery in Baldwyn. Agnew & Sons Funeral Home of Baldwyn is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include one daughter, Sheronda Crump; one stepson, Nathan Selmon; five sisters, Shirley Ragin, Effie Hill, Margie Ragin, Shereal Stubbs, and Alice Faye Shelley; three brothers, Marshall Ragin, Wallace Ragin, and William Ragin; one granddaughter; seven step grandchildren; and his caregiver, Barbara Cook.

TUPELO – Pauline Weeks, 85, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center after a lengthy illness. The daughter of Will and Corrie Warren, she was born in Pontotoc County on April 15, 1927. She retired from Futorian Manufacturing where she worked many years as a seamstress. She then worked at J.C. Penney, sold Avon products and enjoyed sewing for the public. She was a longtime active member of Chesterville Baptist Church until her health failed. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing cards and spending time with her family who remembers her as the best cook ever.
Services will be 2 p.m. today at the Lee Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Jordan Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Lee Memorial Park.
Survivors include her two daughters, Jan Phillips (B.L.) of Saltillo and Bobbie Dulaney (Jerry) of Houston; her sister-in-law, Frances Warren of Brewer; five grandchildren, Bryan Phillips (Martha), Kirk Phillips (Christy) and Mandy Phillips, all of Saltillo, Mary Beth Dulaney and Chloe Dulaney, both of Houston; six great-grandchildren, Abby and John Michael Phillips, Bailey and Reece Phillips, and Caleb and Jena Klauser; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and eight brothers and sisters.
Pallbearers will be Bryan Phillips, Kirk Phillips, Sammy Hall, Jackie Hall, Donald Warren and Danny Warren. Her great-grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers.
VARDAMAN – Willis Eugene Gene Austin, 75 , died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012. He was born Nov. 5, 1936, in Waterloo, Ala., to William Berlon Austin and Mable Christine Cherry Austin. He was a retired farmer.
Services are 2 p.m. today at Houston Funeral Home with the Rev. Johnny Cherry and the Rev. Bobby Brock officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Walls Austin of Vardaman; his daughter, Linda Hicks (Tim) of Houston; his grandchildren, Amber and Cory West of Houston, Kenny and Crystal Hicks of Booneville; his great-grandsons, Trace West and Austin Hicks; his sister, Annie Nichols (Tommy) of Houston; his niece, Nancy Alford (Eddie) of Houston; and his nephew, WilliamGray (Jennifer) of Houston.

NATCHEZ – Alice Farris Hargett died Sept. 19, 2012. She was born Dec. 3, 1929, in Itawamba County, the daughter of James H. Farris and Eula N. Farris. She married Winfred B. Hargett on Feb. 22, 1946, in Tremont. She was an active member of First Baptist Church in Natchez until her health failed. She was a member of the Praise Sunday School Class and volunteered in the extended nursery for over 40 years.
Services in Natchez will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Laird Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Ed Wright officiating. Services in Fulton will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Senter Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer H. Beam and husband, Mike and her grandson, Thomas Beam, all of New Albany; and one brother, Clifton Farris and his wife, Odean, of Fulton.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four sisters, Ruth Fears, Ruby Davis, Beulah Fears, and Ressie Thompson; and three brothers, Roy Farris, Marvin Farris, and J.R. Farris.

BLUE MOUNTAIN – James William Thomas Jr., 58, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012, at his residence. He was born Aug. 21, 1954, to James William Thomas Sr. and Dorothy Henry Thomas. He was a factory and sawmill worker.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Ripley Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Chris Hensley officiating. Burial will be in Blue Mountain Cemetery.
He is survived by one daughter, Amanda Garrison (Steve) of Myrtle; two sisters, Sharon Bishop (Gerald) of Blue Mountain and Belinda Meadows (Bobby) of Ripley; three brothers, Richard Thomas (Amanda) of Blue Mountain, Anthony Thomas (Tonya) of Lamar, and Steve Thomas (Sandra) of Ripley; and two grandchildren, Kylee Hudson and Mallory Garrison, both of Myrtle.

RIPLEY – Charles Sweatman, 80, died Sept. 20, 2012, at Tippah County Hospital in Ripley. He was born Feb. 27, 1932, to William Bryan Bill and Onie Kincaid Sweatman in Tippah County. He was a farmer and plumber.

POTTS CAMP – Hazel Izoma Foote, 87, died Sept. 19, 2012, at Baptist Hospital in Memphis. She was born Nov. 4, 1924, in Potts Camp to Nobel and Pearly Free Rhynes. She was a member of Bethlehem Church of the Lord Jesus Christ and a homemaker.

GOLDEN – Derrick Bradley Gasaway, 33, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012, at his home. He was born Feb. 25, 1979, in Red Bay and was a construction worker. He attended Fairview Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Hannah Gasaway; his mother, Rhonda Altom (Mike) of Tupelo; his father, R.L. Gasaway of Fairview; five brothers, Tim Gasaway, Scotty Gasaway, Austin Gasaway, Matthew Gasaway, and Michael Altom; three sisters, Melissa Funderburk, Kim Hacker, and Meagen Robinson; and nieces and nephews, Jessica and T.C. Gasaway, Gavin, Gage and Garren Earp, Presley Funderburk and Miles, McKayla and Maggie Robinson.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, James H. and Jennie Barker and Robert and Ray Gasaway; a niece, Chelsey Hacker ; and a nephew, Mobley Robinson.
