TUPELO – Roy Shelton was born on June 4, 1924, in Houlka to Bob and Alma Prude Shelton. He went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at the age of 89. Roy is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Doris Doss Shelton; his children, Loretta Kanyo (Andre’) and Jerry Shelton (Morgan); four grandchildren, Craig Shelton (Lenora), Skip Shelton (Jennifer), Brandon Kanyo and Zack Kanyo; seven great-grandchildren, Paul Shelton, Justin Shelton, Jackson Shelton, Aiden Shelton, Dillon Shelton, Brooklynn McCoy and Bryce McCoy; and his sister, Martha Paden (Eugene). He was also brother to the late Milton Shelton. He loved his family immensely and always adored the times he spent with them.
After graduation in 1942 from Houlka High School, he was drafted at the age of 18 and proudly served his country in the United States Army as a member of the 245th Engineer Combat Battalion during World War II.
After the military, he farmed with his brother and father. After the farm flooded, he worked at the Patch Tractor Company. He also worked many years as an insurance agent with National Life Insurance from 1957-1964 and Allstate Insurance from 1964 until his retirement.
A man of faith, he was a founding member and one of the first three elders of Lawndale Presbyterian Church and currently attended Harrisburg Baptist Church. He also committed his time as a member of the Gideons International. The family asks that memorials may be made in his honor to the Gideons, P.O. Box 140800, Nashville, TN 37214.
He was a member of Good Sam’s RV Club, the Jaycees and enjoyed spending time camping, baking and woodworking.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the celebration of his life that was well-lived with honor and integrity on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, at 2 p.m. at the Harrisburg Baptist Church with Dr. Forrest Sheffield officiating. A graveside with military honors will follow at Lee Memorial Park. Visitation will begin noon until service time Wednesday, at the church.

BANNER – Allene Davis Massey, 90, died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at Calhoun Health Services Nursing Home in Calhoun City. She was born July 30, 1923, in Coffeeville. She was a homemaker and a member of Hopewell Baptist Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Ruby Davis of Murphy, N.C., and Elizabeth Carter of Bruce; one son, Homer Floyd of Sarepta; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Winston Davis and Della B. Flannigan Davis; her husbands, Gabe Floyd and Archie Massey; one daughter, Mary Lamar; two sons, Gabe Floyd Jr. and James Floyd; three sisters, Ila Boaks, Dale Cofer and Lillian Tidwell; and one brother, Frank Davis.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today, Sept. 3, at Parker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Bruce. Bro. Jerry Smith will officiate. Burial will follow at Banner Cemetery, in Banner.

TUPELO – Sylvia Williams Brown, 75, died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at the Green Houses of United Methodist Senior Services in Tupelo. She was born April 1, 1938, in Tupelo to John Rush Williams and Martha Miller Williams. A lifelong resident of Tupelo, she graduated from Tupelo High School and continued her education at Millsaps College in Jackson. She married Tom Brown on March 13, 1978, and loved being with him and their family. She was a master homemaker, enjoyed interior decorating, and had a passion for shopping. She was a member of First Christian Church of Tupelo.
A celebration of life service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, in Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with the Rev. Sherry Horton officiating. Burial will follow in Tupelo Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to service time Wednesday.
Survivors include six sons, Bill Wood III (Sonja) of Tupelo, Tommy Brown of Memphis, Brandon Donaldson of Red Bank, Steve Brown of Jackson, Tenn., Eric Brown of Red Bank and Micci Brown of Florida; one daughter, Elizabeth Ann Wood Gray of Tupelo; two brothers, James Williams (Frances) and Mike Williams (Michelle), all of Tupelo; six grandchildren, Josh Wood, Chris Wood, Zack Wood, Wesley Gray, Callee Johnson and Meagan Johnson; and one great-grandchild, Mia Wood.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Tom; two sons, Brad Brown and Michael Brown.

TUPELO – Jeri Nichols Beard, 83, passed away Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center. She was born Feb. 23, 1930, in Lee County to Walton and Jessie Nichols. She lived many years in Florida and California and traveled extensively.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, at W.E. Pegues on Jefferson Street in Tupelo with Dr. Gayle Alexander officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Cemetery.
She is survived by one son, Billy James Adams (Vickie) of Port Lucie, Fla.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, H.C. “Ben” Nichols of Ormond Beach, Fla., Bobby Gene Nichols (Janet) of Baldwyn and Dr. Wilmer “Wimp” Nichols (Arlene) of Gainesville, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Beard; her parents; four brothers; two sisters; and one daughter, Linda Houston.

HOLLY SPRINGS – Louis “Mitch” Tomlinson Sr., 73, died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis. He was born Nov. 8, 1939, in Marshall County. He was a retired truck driver and a member of the Holly Springs Church of Christ. He was a funeral director with United Funeral Service in New Albany and Holly Springs Funeral Home. He was also a deputy with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department and the Holly Springs Police Department.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, at Holly Springs Funeral Home. Bro. Kerry Reid, Bro. Todd Sanderson and Bro. Jerry Coates will officiate. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Holly Springs.
He is survived by one son, Louis “Mitch’ Tomlinson Jr. (Starlit) of Holly Springs; grandson, Louis “Trey” Tomlinson III of Holly Springs; granddaughter, Lucinda Graham Tomlinson of Holly Springs; great-grandson, Trevor Ray Tomlinson of Rogers, Ark.; stepdaughter, Paula Smoot (Gary) of Byhalia; four stepgrandchildren; and 11 stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bunnie Moore Tomlinson; his parents, Arthur Louis Tomlinson and Pollye Mitchell Tomlinson; two stepchildren, Robert Mitchell and Belinda M. Gaskill.

ECRU – Ima Faye Mayes Mercer, 83, died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County in New Albany. She was born April 29, 1930, in Wildersville, Tenn., to Elvis Franklin and Ada Roberta Vineyard Mayes. She was a resident of the Friendship community for more than 40 years. She was a homemaker and a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, at Pafford Funeral Home in Lexington, Tenn. Bro. Bill Thompson will officiate. Burial will be in Darden Cemetery in Darden, Tenn.
