Mattie Deaton
THOMASVILLE, Ala. – Mattie Alice Nichols Deaton, 94, died on Friday, Sept. 28, 2012, at Mobile Infirmary. She was born on Nov. 5, 1917, in Nicholsville, Ala. Formerly of Amory, she held many jobs from drug store clerk to waitress.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home in Amory with the Rev. George Collins officiating. Burial will follow in Haughton Memorial Park.
She is survived by her sons, William Fendley (Dot) and James R. Fendley, both of Thomasville, Ala., and Melvin T. Fendley of Saraland, Ala.; daughters, Betty Thompson of Thomasville, Ala., and Carolyn Roberts of Grove Hill, Ala.; stepdaughter, Ann Hudson (Bob) of Bel Air, Md.; stepsons, James Nichols Sr. (Jackie) of Memphis, Tenn., and William Deaton of Amory; daughter-in-law, Judy Nichols of Grove Hill, Ala.; sisters, Anna Lou Johnson of Selma, Ala., and Evelyn Ross of Selmont, Ala.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. today at O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home in Thomasville, Ala., and 1 p.m. until service time Monday at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home in Amory.

Shirley Kelly
TUPELO – Shirley Jean Putt Kelly, 73, died Friday, Sept. 28, 2012, at her residence. She was a faithful Christian, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to her family. She was born Sept. 21, 1939, to George and Mary Putt in Lee County. She was a 1958 graduate of Saltillo High School. She was the wife of Steve A. Kelly for 54 years. She retired from ELJER Plumbing where she worked for over 30 years. She was a charter member of the East Main Church of Christ.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Bro. Gary Williams, Bro. Matthew Benfield and Bro. Adam Miller officiating. Burial will be in Mayfield Cemetery of Saltillo.
Survivors include her husband, Steve A. Kelly of Tupelo; two sons, Dale Kelly of Booneville and Jason Kelly (Rhonda) of Mantachie; one daughter, Kristy Brasfield (Dewayne) of Saltillo; three grandsons, Dylan, Josh and Clint Kelly; three granddaughters, Megan Berry (Chris), Faith and Katie Brasfield; two great-grandchildren, Landon and Haylie Trenary; one sister, Mary Edith Sandlin of Saltillo; and beloved caregiver Lavern Williams.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Betty Marie Hedge; and two brothers, George and Danny Putt.
Pallbearers will be Dylan, Josh and Clint Kelly, Terry and Woody Turner and Bradley Bond. Honorary pallbearers will be Grady McCaskill, Marlon Geno, Dewayne Brasfield, Lloyd Waggoner, Pete Barber and the Elders and Deacons of the East Main Church of Christ.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

OKOLONA – Alma M. Armstrong, 92, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, at Shearer-Richardson Nursing Home in Okolona.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Lee Memorial Chapel. Internment is at East Chickasaw Garden.
Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Howard McCarley
VINA, Ala. – Howard McCarley, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, at Burns Nursing Home in Russellville, Ala.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel in Red Bay, Ala. Burial will be in Pilot Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at Deaton Funeral Home.
Edith Martin
RIPLEY – Edith Hines Martin, 85, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. She was born on Aug. 21, 1927, to Frank Leslie and Ammie Daniel Hines in Benton County. She was a teacher for 291⁄2 years in Tippah and Benton County schools. She was a proud graduate of Blue Mountain College, Class of 1949, where she has been a lifetime member of the Alumna Association. She received a master’s degree from Scarritt College in religious education. She was a charter member of the Century Civic Club, serving as the first president and served as past president of the Mississippi Veterinary Medical Auxiliary.
She had a very vivacious, bubbly personality with an enthusiasm for life which influenced everyone who knew her. She loved her family and friends and showed it by her actions. She was always interested in the improvement of her community and was willing to work hard to see those goals accomplished.
Service is at 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Ripley, with Dr. Rex Yancey and Dr. Patrick Chapman officiating. Internment is at Tippah Memorial Gardens. McBride Funeral Home in Ripley is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Joe Godwin Martin of Ripley; son, Dr. Joe Hines Martin of Chattanooga, Tenn.; daughters, Millie Renfroe (Steve) of Jackson, Melanie Hickman (Steve) of Tupelo and Leslie Walter (Tommy) of Ripley; nine grandchildren, Scarlett Nicely of Chattanooga, Tenn., Allison Callahan of Huntsville, Ala., Ashleigh Hannah and Chase Renfrow, both of Brandon, Martin Hickman of Nashville, Tenn., Cody Hickman of Tupelo, and James, Sarah and John Thomas Walter, all of Ripley; great-grandchild, Saffley Hickman; her twin sister, Ruth Cook of Ripley; and brother, Curtis Hines (Marjorie) of Hopewell community.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Dan Hines; and sisters, Alva Powell and Earlyne Burton.
Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.
Visitation is 2 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home and 10 a.m. until service time Monday at the church.

Raymond Thomas
RIPLEY – Raymond Earl Thomas, 66, died Friday, Sept. 28, 2012, at his residence in Ripley. He was born Jan. 9, 1946, to Robert Lloyd Thomas and Maudie Mae Walters. He was a member of West Ripley Baptist Church and a sawmill worker.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Ripley Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Doc Shelton, Bro. Randy Latch and Bro. Bill Baker officiating. Burial will be in Antioch Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Edgar Etta Leopard Thomas of Ripley; four daughters, Debra James (David), Melissa Smith (John) and Julie Jeanes, all of Ripley and Rebecca Simmons (Alfred) of Walnut; three sisters, Peggy Pirtle (Charles), Betty Stepp (Robert), both of Senatobia and Willie Mae Robinson (Robert) of Horn Lake; one brother, Roy Thomas (Eleanora) of Senatobia; seven grandchildren, Kayla Ward (James), L.J. Smith, Haley Wyatt, Bentley Jeanes, all of Ripley, James Simmons, Jonathan Simmons and Micheal Simmons, all of Walnut; and two great-grandchildren, Hayden Ward and Owen Ward of Ripley.
Pallbearers will be Barrett Akins, William Rob Akins, Cody Winkles, Jimmy Smith, Mickey Seawright, Nick Simmons and David Leopard. Honorary pallbearers will be L.J. Smith, James Simmons, Barry Akins, Dennis Jordan and James Ward.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Sebran Thomas and Eugene Thomas; and one sister, Margarette Hopkins.

Dale Glissen
RIPLEY – Dale Edward Glissen, 63, died Friday, Sept. 28, 2012, at his residence in Ripley. He was born June 18, 1949, to Edd Glissen and the late Myrtie Mauney Glissen. He attended Rogers Chapel Church. He had retired from Biltrite Corporation after 38 years of service. He loved to hunt, fish and watch sports. His world revolved around his granddaughter, Danielle, and he loved watching her play softball.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Ripley Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Tim Latch and Bro. Doc Shelton officiating. Burial will be in Falkner Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Paula Brown Glissen of Ripley; one daughter, Nikki Glissen Bass (Barry) of Ripley; his father, Edd Glissen; sister, Esther Tigrett of Ripley; brother, Keith Glissen (Tami) of Ripley; one grandchild, Danielle Phelps of Ripley; three nieces, Veronica Knowles (Kyle), Elizabeth Glissen and Mallory Glissen, all of Ripley; and one great- nephew, Jak Knowles of Ripley.
He was preceded in death by his mother.
Pallbearers will be Trent Carter, Jason Glissen, Keith Richardson, Kerry Elliott, Steve Bass, Tommy Robertson, Kyle Knowles and Rocky Glissen. Honorary pallbearers will be Tommy Graves, Doug Horton and Randy Stewart.

RIPLEY – Fredda Gayle Huddleston Middleton, 55, died Friday, Sept. 28, 2012, at her residence. She was born Nov. 2, 1956, to Leon and Jane McDowell Huddleston in Ripley. She was a retired Licensed Practical Nurse and worked with home health. She was a member of Whittentown Baptist Church.
Service is at 11 a.m. Monday at McBride Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Trey South and Bro. Stacy McKee officiating. Internment is at Whittentown Cemetery in Ripley.
She is survived by her husband, William H. Middleton of Ripley; her mother, Jane McDowell Huddleston of Ripley; daughter, Heather Glidewell Wickert (Jim) of New Albany; son, Glenn Glidewell II of Ripley; granddaughter, Kaleigh Buntin of New Albany; stepson, William D. Middleton (Francine of Salisburd, N.N.; stepdaughters, Tami Page (Ricky) of Concord, N.C., Traci Middleton of Jacksonville, Fla., and Terri Schunck (Scott) of Loves Park, Ill.; brothers, Gary Huddleston (Teresa) and Jeff Huddleston of Ripley; special niece, Brittany Gross of Ripley; 11 stepgrandchildren; and six stepgreat-granchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father; and granddaughter, Ashleigh Buntin.
