Mary Alice Gillentine Christian
TUPELO – Mary Alice Gillentine Christian, 91, went to be with her Lord Friday, September 27, 2013, at Magnolia Manor. The youngest child of eleven, Mary Alice was born in Lee County on July 25, 1922, to George Washington and Lelia Rebecca Payne Gillentine. After being raised during the depression, she developed a “don’t waste” philosophy that would continue throughout her life. A first for her family, she graduated from Mooreville High School. She lived in Eutaw, Alabama, for many years and lived in Tupelo since 1975. She worked many years at the North Mississippi Medical Center on the pediatric floor. Due to her hard work and example, she raised three sons, who are two certified public accountants and a pharmacist. She adored her family, especially her grandchildren who thought she never raised her voice. She loved roses, gardening and never let a pine cone stay in her yard. She was a member of Priceville Baptist Church and also for a time had attended Auburn Baptist Church.
A celebration of her life will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 1, 2013, at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Rev. Tim McMillan officiating and a eulogy by her granddaughter, Cynthia Sprich. A graveside will follow at Gilvo Cemetery.
She is survived by her three sons, Bill Morgan (Belinda) of Tupelo, John Poole (Diane) of Trussville, Alabama and George Poole (Rebecca) of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; six grandchildren, Bryan Poole (Katie), Cynthia Sprich (David), Dana Morgan Booth (Isiah), Mary Grace Edmonds (Kyle), Betsey Poole and Andy Poole; six great-grandchildren, Jack Poole, Frank Poole, Jordan Sprich, Madison Sprich, Laine Edmonds and Pierce Edmonds.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, John Morgan, Jack Poole and Dexter Christian; five brothers and five sisters; her grandson, John Vernon Morgan.
The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. today, September 30, 2013, at the funeral home.

VERONA – Ida Bell Oliver, 86, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at Tupelo Nursing and Rehab. She was born Oct. 4, 1926, in Tishomingo County to George and Jean Prestige Ashley. She served her church as a Sunday school teacher and was currently a member of Verona First Baptist Church. She was a homemaker, owned and operated a fabric store and assisted her husband, Mr. Oneal, in his construction company. She enjoyed sewing and reading but got the most enjoyment by being a wife, mother and grandmother.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, at Lee Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Marc Howard officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park. Lee Memorial Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Ann Harris (Ron) of Tupelo and Judy Miller (Ray) of Verona; four sons, Edwin Oliver (Sarah) of Tishomingo, John Oliver (Linda) of Red Bay, Ala., Larry Oliver of Tupelo and Billy Oliver (Brenda) of Tupelo; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 67 years, Oneal Oliver who died on July 17, 2013; four sisters, Virginia Pendegraph, Leona Garrison, Pearl Ashley and Estelle Bostick; and five brothers, Perdie Ashley, Ray Ashley, Alfred Ashley, Earvin Ashley and Dewey Ashley.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Mark Harris, Brian Oliver, Patrick Oliver, Greg Oliver, Chris Oliver, Joey Horton and Christopher Oliver.

HOULKA – Arnold Gene Collums Sr., 78, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was born Oct. 3, 1934, in Calhoun County. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, a veteran and a self employeed logger.
Services will be 2 p.m. today, Sept. 30, at Thorn Church of God with Bro. Arnold Amason officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Houlka. Memorial Funeral Home of Houston is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Mavis Marie Barnette Collums of Houlka; two daughters, Vicky Holder (Doug) of Vardaman and Betty Jean Shields of Houlka; one son, Arnold Gene Collums Jr. of Houlka; 10 grandchildren, James Glenn Tharp Jr., John Roy Tharp, Brittney Rena Tharp, Amy Collums, Wendy Shields, Crystal Shields, Jessy Ann Collums, Josey Marie Collums, Brandy Holder and Brittany Austin; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Sue Clark of Potts Camp; and one brother Jimmy Collums of Houlka.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Henry Collums and Eula Mae Prewitt Collums; one great-grandchild, Nathen Tharp; and three brothers, Billy Joel Collums, Winston Collums and Laverne Collums.
Pallbearers will be John Roy Tharp, Nick Ruth, Jack Hurst, Mike Collums, James Tharp Jr. and Arnold Gene Collums Jr.
Honary pallbearers will be Ron Nolan, Elvis Langford and Dave Westmoreland.

IUKA – Melba Weytha Clingan Nunley, 75, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.

WHEELER – Kenneth M. Henderson, 44, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at his home. He was mechanically inclined and could fix and do almost anything. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He truly loved his family.
Survivors include one daughter, Danielle Henderson of Wheeler; one son, Matthew Henderson of Wheeler; two brothers, James Henderson (Mitzi) of Booneville and Steve Henderson (Rita) of Long Beach; two sisters, Billie Hartman (Scott) of Gulfport and Brenda Hutcheson (Randy) of New Site; and a host of nieces and nephews.

WEST POINT – Barbara Kyte Harrell, 81, passed away Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-East in Memphis, Tenn. Barbara was born Aug. 17, 1932, in Knoxville, Tenn., to Gladys Basinger and Billy Kyte. She was a florist and a manager for Sears Roebuck for 17 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church where she was an avid Sunday school teacher for 15 years. She loved to shop. She loved and breathed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. When they arrived and surrounded her, it never failed to bring a smile to her face. She married Clarence Harrell on Dec. 24, 1949, in Knoxville, Tenn., and he preceded her in death on Aug. 29, 2010.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, at Calvert Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jeff Shannon officiating. Burial will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, in Woodlawn Cemetery in Knoxville, Tenn. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Gloria Harrell Turner (Mark) of Starkville and Patty Hare (Michael) of Fulton; a special family friend, Sandy Henley (Tommy) of West Point; four grandchildren, Christie Sims (Alex), Marc Weaver (Davlynn), Mark Turner Jr. and Leslie Scott (Stephen); and 10 great-grandchildren, Chris Garner, Alexis Weaver, Trista Weaver, Kaitlyn Weaver, Blake Meeks, Savanah Meeks, Hunter Meeks, Abby Scott, Sarah Scott and Lauren Scott.
