Lately I have wondered if I am the only person in this city who is concerned about the high taxes we pay and the condition our city streets are in. We recently moved back into town and in only four months we are needing new struts on our vehicle. Now, I do not know if anyone else has been concerned or not, but I believe with the high taxes we pay in our fair city, we deserve decent streets.

I travel from one side of town to the other each morning transporting my child to school and going to work. Most of the streets I travel are unbelievable. Dips, high spots, pot holes and large holes. It’s almost like a roller coaster on some. This is ridiculous and uncalled for. I think as city residents, we need to speak up. There is new construction in east Tupelo on a large park and from what I have seen a very large park. The park will have two ponds. Now, I lived for four years across the street from the Elvis Presley Park and during the time the maintenance on the pond itself was very poorly taken care of. Several tourists which toured around the Elvis Presley Park mentioned to us how terrible it was and how irresponsible the city was to let it go down. I cannot tell you how embarrassed this made me. When the media brought it to my attention that our mayor was requested a raise of $15,000 added to his $60,000 per year, I wondered “How could this be?” I believe we deserve to see results on what we have before a raise is considered or we can all be hush, hush and go bumpty, bumpty, dip, dip to our new park on Sunday afternoons and not wonder or worry where our city taxes are going! Hillsdale Drive in east Tupelo is really hard to believe. If you want a thrill, visit that residential area. North Thomas and West Jackson are a wonder, too!

Are our city streets part of our mayor’s duties? If not, my question is, “Who is getting paid our hard-earned dollars to keep them up, and if not repaired, how will we be able to pay the upkeep on our vehicles if the streets do not get the attention they so desperately need?”

I know that this letter to the Forum may not help, but at least I have the satisfaction knowing that I spoke up and you, as a citizen of Tupelo, have that right, also.
