STATE OPINION: Bann texting while driving in Mississippi

By Sun Herald

Mississippi now prohibits school bus drivers and those with learner’s permits or intermediate licenses from text messaging while driving. It is time for the state to expand the ban to all drivers. Mississippi is surrounded by states that ban all drivers from texting now that Alabama’s prohibition has gone into effect. Mississippi is in a distinct minority among the states.
Along with Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas, Mississippi prohibits those just learning to drive from texting. But the danger of texting and driving does not go away as one ages or becomes a more experienced driver.
The devices that accommodate social media are marvelous means of communication. But their use by drivers is unquestionably a distraction, and a distracted driver is a dangerous driver.
