It was a somewhat risky call by President Barack Obama to order the Navy Seals to carry out the mission that lead to the death of Osama Bin Laden.
A lot of things could have gone wrong. No one knew with absolute certainty that OBL was in that compound in Pakistan. If he had not been, Obama, and the USA, would have looked foolish. But the best decision that Obama made was in choosing not to inform the Pakistani government that we were on our way. Doing so could have compromised the whole mission and put the Navy Seals’ lives in more jeopardy. Someone there would have probably tipped off OBL. So, it was the right decision to keep the mission stealth.
So make no mistake, President Obama, the CIA and the Navy Seals deserve all the credit for finding and killing OBL, a man responsible for murdering more than 3,000 of our fellow Americans on Sept. 11, 2001, when the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers were taken down. On commending the raid, almost all Americans agree.
However, after the helicopters left the ground with the body of bin Laden, the whole story gets bizarre and somewhat confusing.
According to the White House, Obama authorized an Islamic burial ceremony for OBL on an aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea. White House press secretary Jay Carney said this: “Aboard the USS Carl Vinson, the burial of Bin Laden was done in performance with Islamic precepts and practices. The deceased body was washed and placed in a white sheet. The body was placed in a weighted bag, a military officer read prepared a religious remarks which were translated into Arabic by a native speaker. After the words were complete, the body was placed on a prepared flat board, tipped up and the deceased’s body eased into the sea.”
The idea of giving anyone the job of washing Osama bin Laden’s dead body aboard a U.S. Navy ship is repulsive. I hope no American seaman or solider was commanded to do this. Who are we trying to please and appease here? The president, who didn’t even issue a proclamation celebrating Good Friday or Easter observed by millions of American Christians, doesn’t miss a chance to show honor to, and heap praise on, Muslims. He often goes out of his way and over the top with this adoration. Why did the president dignify a mass murderer with this kind of religious service when it was Obama himself who said OBL did not represent Islam? So if he didn’t represent Islam, what is the point of an Islamic funeral? It makes no sense.
What this is folks, is more politically correct silliness. The whole thing looks foolish. It’s a pathetic attempt to show our soft side to the Muslim world. Just issue a statement saying OBL was buried at sea, that is all the White House needed to do. We don’t owe the Muslim world or anyone else an explanation of how we got rid of his body. Besides, Muslims around the world should be glad that someone who hijacked their religion and who has done more to destroy the real image of Islam which is, as we all know, peace, is now dead.
I’m not convinced Obama didn’t give the Navy Seals the “shoot to kill” order. Or, at least he was hoping they would. He was smart enough to know the circus that would have been created had OBL been captured alive and brought to the United States.
In the “without shame” department from the world of politics comes this blast from the past. Here’s former Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi from a press conference on Sept. 7, 2006, when George W. Bush was president:
“Even if Osama bin Laden is caught tomorrow, it is five years too late. He has done more damage the longer he has been out there. But, in fact, the damage that he has done . . . is done. And even to capture him now I don’t think makes us any safer.”
And here’s Nancy Pelosi now that Barack Obama is president: “The death of Osama bin Laden marks the most significant development in our fight against al-Qaida. . . . I salute President Obama, his national security team, Director Panetta, our men and women in the intelligence community and military, and other nations who supported this effort for their leadership in achieving this major accomplishment. . . . [T]he death of Osama bin Laden is historic. . . “
While this is humorous to read because it is so blatantly intellectually dishonest, it also the kind of thing that has poisoned the well in Washington.
