YOUR OPINION: Letters to the Editor February 27, 2013

By NEMS Daily Journal

Thank goodness, Holland opposed the PERS changes
Thanks to Rep. Holland for his support of the state retirees and future retirees concerning proposed retirement system changes by Sen. Nancy Collins.
i have expressed my feelings about this to her and I sincerely hope that other retirees will do the same before it is too late.
I am the beneficiary of a state employee. My husband, Wayne Gaines, served as sheriff of Union County for three terms. This was back in the day when the salary for this office was not nearly as attractive as today. He was proud and honored to serve his county. He also looked forward to retirement and to the retirement benefit he had been promised by our great state of Mississippi.
He did retire and was so very thankful for his modest check each month but really appreciated the cost of living adjustment that he received in December. Wayne died on the 29th of July, 2012. Thank goodness, he had cared enough for his family, to see that his benefits would continue to be paid to me.
As anyone who has been left to maintain a household alone knows, expenses for one are almost as much as for two. There is also less income due to the loss of one Social Security income combined with the fact that insurance, taxes, and general expenses continue to skyrocket.
Please continue to fight for an elected Board of Trustees and no freezes on COLA. Thank you!
