Chargers win seventh straight tennis title
RIDGELAND — Oxford’s winning streak in tennis remains. The Chargers won a seventh straight MHSAA state title, defeating Stone County Wednesday afternoon at the Ridgeland Tennis Center. It was the fourth straight victory for the Chargers over the Tomcats.
Oxford (21-0 overall) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead by winning both singles matches. Quinn Elliott was the first off the court for the Chargers as he won boys singles 6-1, 6-2. Grace Ann Jones won her girls singles match 6-1, 6-0 to put the Chargers ahead 2-0.
The Chargers then went ahead 6-2, 6-1 when the No. 1 girls doubles team of Sarah Nash and McClellan Davis won 6-2, 6-1. Oxford’s seventh title was then sealed with a 6-4, 6-4 win by the No. 1 boys doubles team of Will Swindoll and Cole Atkins. It was the first time the duo had played together.
Atkins, who usually plays with Kara Rose in mixed doubles, said that he last played with Swindoll prior to the start of the season. Oxford coach Louis Nash has a tendency of mixing up the lineup when it comes time to play the state title match, so the pairing wasn’t completely off the wall.
“I felt comfortable doing it. I’ve been playing with Callan (Shinall) most of the year,” said Swindoll, who won his fourth title in a row. “We’ve played in practice and stuff. We’re prepared for every type of match.”
“Coach Nash usually never tells us the scouting report until before the match anyway,” said Atkins, who was celebrating his first title with the team. “I’ve played the last eight matches of the year with Kara (Rose) so it was a little out of nowhere.”
