Chargers rout Lewisburg, forcing Game 3

There was no other option than to win for the Oxford Chargers on the baseball diamond Friday night, not if they wanted to advance. The resolve to stand and fight resulted in a one-sided 15-1 victory over Lewisburg in five innings, forcing a deciding game Saturday night to decide who moves on in the MHSAA Class 5A playoffs.

Oxford collected 13 hits and drove in 10 runs against the Patriots, who won the first game of the best-of-three series 4-1 Thursday night. Oxford scored the bulk of its runs — 13 to be exact — in the bottom of the first inning.

Jack McClure had three hits and four RBIs to lead Oxford at the plate. Jason Barber collected a home run and drove in three runs. Four Chargers had at least two hits, while five drove in at least one run.

Houston and Hunter Roth both pitched in the contest. Hunter Roth earned the win, despite pitching one less inning than his inning than his younger brother, who logged three innings overall. As a result, Houston Roth earned the save. Houston Roth never allowed a hit, or run, in his time on the mound.

Tanner Lloyd took the loss for Lewisburg after allowing eight hits and 11 runs in 0.1 innings of work.

Oxford travels to play at Lewisburg. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. The game can be heard locally on 95.5 FM with the “Voice of the Chargers” Don Brooks calling the action.
