Lafayette advances in 4A softball playoffs

The middle innings proved to be the key for the Lafayette Lady Commodores in their matchup with West Lauderdale. Lafayette scored nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings combined en route to a 12-11 win in the best-of-three MHSAA Class 4A softball series.

Both teams combined to commit five errors, while Lafayette finished with 15 overall hits. Katrina Wilson and Hope Patton each had three hits for LHS. Both each had a double and a triple.Rae Drewrey, Jada McIntosh and Moesha Phillips each had two hits for Lafayette.

Avery McCullough went the distance in the pitching circle to earn the win for the Lady Commodores. She threw 126 pitches and was pitching for the fourth straight game. Lafayette led West Lauderdale 12-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth. The Lady Knights scored four runs in both the bottom of the fifth and sixth, but McCullough closed the door in the seventh.
