Chargers advance to 5A North Half title series

Oxford’s offense, at least early, proved to be just enough to overcome five errors and a late rally by Germantown in Game 2 of its best-of-three MHSAA Class 5A baseball series Saturday night.

The Chargers (26-8 overall) swept the Mavericks, winning 7-6 Saturday, to advance to this week’s 5A North Half title series. Oxford scored all seven of its runs in the first three frames and then held on as Germantown scored two runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to make the game close late.

Houston Roth improved to 12-0 on the year by going the distance on the mound for the Chargers. He gave up nine runs and six runs, but only three of those runs were earned. He finished with five strikeouts against two walks.

Oxford finished with nine hits in the win, with Brooks Krouse leading the team with three hits. Chadwick Lamar and Pittman Phillips each had two hits, while Jack McClure had a double and two RBIs.

Germantown ending the game with a runner on when Roth was able to Reed Thames to line out to end the game.

Oxford will face either New Hope or Pearl in the 5A title series. New Hope leads 1-0 with Game 2 Monday in Pearl.
