The Road to Omaha: Day 7

OMAHA, Neb. — OK, it’s official, I have been away from Oxford, MS for a week now. Ole Miss earned a 2-1 win over Texas Tech on Tuesday night in the College World Series, extending the stay, for me, and themselves.

Practice started off the day for the Rebels Wednesday. They were back at Creighton University, to mainly get some work in the batting cages. Ole Miss has struggled to get its offense going in its first two games. Part of that of revolves around all the great pitchers on the teams here. Another part are the large dimensions of TD Ameritrade Park.

The Daily Journal’s Parrish Alford focus in on the lack of power and runs scored in his advance of the meeting with TCU for Thursday’s Sports section.

Today was the last “off” day for the Rebels. If they are able to defeat TCU, the Rebels will have to play back-to-back days, Friday and Saturday, in order to remain alive and still part of the fun here at the CWS. Virginia, which just played a 15-inning marathon, has to be beat twice, as does Vanderbilt on the other side of the bracket.

Here is first baseman Sikes Orvis talking about the offense heading into the next game.

Ready to go

Sam Smith will start Thursday’s game for the Rebels. He started Game 3 of the super regional and also the final game of the Oxford Regional. Smith has been the Rebels’ starter on Sunday all season, but he has struggled the last month, month and a half of the season to go an extended distance on the mound.
