Video Blog: Washington’s power a target for Rebels

For the past two seasons, Ole Miss fans have been clamoring for a power running back to help round out Hugh Freeze’s offense.

Jordan Wilkins was signed to help provide that extra size on short yardage situations two years ago, while Akeem Judd, who will join the team this summer, was signed most recently from junior college.

Of course I’Tavius Mathers has gained some size since he first arrived in Oxford and he showed in the spring game┬áhe’s still got some speed.

Having a bevy of backs is always needed in the SEC, but it is a plus when one back can offer so many different things.

Robert Washington, is a 5-foot-10, 210-pound bruiser, who offers needed size and has more than enough speed to finish in the open field. The North Carolina native was in Oxford a week ago, taking part in the Southern Elite Combine at Lafayette High.

Washington, who is a member of the 2016 signing class, has 31 scholarship offers, including Ole Miss and Mississippi State, among others from the SEC. His most recent offer came from the Florida Gators and he said that he would be cutting down his school list from 31 to 15 in August.

He will graduate from school early, so a final decision is a lot closer than his year in school indicates. Last year, Washington led all sophomores in the nation with 2,512 yards and 28 touchdowns. He was named to the MaxPreps 2013 Sophomore All-American team as a result.

Note: He likes Oxford, Ole Miss, which offered him as an eighth grade, and he has become very close with Lafayette offensive lineman Eli Johnson, who is an Ole Miss pledge for 2016.

Here is an interview with Washington following lunch at last week’s combine.
