The Star Herald reports that Durant is one of three municipalities to pass recent smoke-free air ordinances. Georgetown in Copiah County and Anguilla in Sharkey County also passed similar ordinances, according to the newspaper.
Roy Hart, director of the Office of Tobacco Control at the Mississippi State Department of Health, says banning smoking "will protect all employees and customers in businesses and other public places from the harmful effects of breathing secondhand smoke."
The ordinances will take effect in the next few months.
MSDH says 52 Mississippi cities now have comprehensive smoke-free air ordinances.
