Riverwalk will be collecting bras for the entire month of October. Bras can be donated at Riverwalk Casino Hotel and Shape Up Sisters in Vicksburg, as well as Curves for Women in Jackson. Collections will be accepted from October 1 - 31, so go through those dresser drawers and get your donations made. With nearly 10,000 bras received last year from 20 different states, our new goal for this year is to receive 15,000 bras and at least one bra from each of the 50 states!
From organizations right here at home and even stretching across the globe, the bras have already started coming in. The Overtoun House in Scotland, a Christian group dedicated to helping those in need, hosted a B.Y.O.B. event (Bring Your Own Bra!) where they collected bras and shipped them to Riverwalk for this year’s event. Closer to home, Repeat Street Consignment in Jackson is already gearing up, having contributed 4,000 bras last year (that’s almost half of the total donations!). “Our staff and customers look forward to October all year long,” says owner Michele Austin. “Not only do we get to have fun with all of the bras coming in, but we get to meet so many amazing women with such incredible life stories – plus the bras are all donated to local shelters afterward, and it’s a great feeling to know how many lives are touched. It’s really a great thing that Riverwalk does for the fight against this disease.”
Once the tallies are in, Riverwalk will announce how many bras were collected and the resulting donation that will be made to the American Cancer Society – and, of course, the ceremony that we look forward to every year, stringing together all of the bras and displaying them across the old Highway 80 Mississippi River Bridge. The check presentation and “bra stringing” will take place Thursday, November 3rd at 9:00 a.m. following the Healthy Breast Rally at 8:00 a.m. And you’re invited to all of it!
One in every eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime, but the good news is that 98% of all breast cancer is curable if detected early. “We’ve all been touched by this disease in some way, and Riverwalk is dedicated to doing our part in the fight. We’re so excited about the increased involvement we’ve had from the local communities each year, and we’re looking forward to topping that this year!” says Ginny Tzotzolas, Director of Marketing at Riverwalk.
