A traffic accident sent three people to the hospital and caused traffic delays on Highway 78 between Tupelo and New Albany Tuesday night.

An 18-wheeler and car collided at around 5 p.m., according to Mississippi Highway Patrol Trooper Ray Hall. The accident took place at mile marker 67 outside of New Albany.

Three people - a grandmother and two children - were airlifted to The Regional Medical Center at Memphis (The MED) in Memphis with serious, but not life threatening injuries.

Traffic was never stopped, but was disrupted for about an hour.

The accident is under investigation.
