120 voters voted against the proposal, while 109 voted in favor. The vote came following the presentation of a petition to the mayor and board of aldermen bearing approximately 130 signatures. The petition took advantage of legislation passed recently at the state level.
Senate Bill 2497, which took effect in January, permits any city of 5,000 or more population, or any county seat in a county which has voted against coming out from under the dry law, to hold an election to come out from under Mississippi’s dry law if 20 percent or more of the city’s registered voters sign a petition to do so.
