The Ridgeland-based company said it will activate its 4G Long Term Evolution network today in Tupelo, Verona, Guntown, Saltillo, Baldwyn, Chesterville and Plantersville.
The 4G network is geared toward data users who browse the Internet, watch videos, play music, share photos and send emails from their mobile devices. C Spire said 4G is up to 10 times faster than its previous network.
Customers must have a 4G-compatible device to access the new network. C Spire started selling the Motorola PHOTON Q last week online and in retail stores for $199.99 with a two-year contract. The company said the Samsung Galaxy S III and the Franklin Wireless 2-in-1 smart USB modem and mobile hotspot are coming soon. The press release didn't provide a specific date.
Company and city officials plan to celebrate the new network today at 11:30 a.m. at the C Spire store on West Main Street.
Tupelo is one of 31 Mississippi markets receiving C Spire's 4G LTE services between now and the end of October. Several other Northeast Mississippi communities are on the list, including Starkville, West Point, Oxford, Corinth, New Albany, Pontotoc, Booneville and 21 unnamed communities in Lee, Union, Tippah, Prentiss and Pontotoc counties.
An additional six Mississippi markets will be added by the end of 2012 as part of the company's multimillion-dollar investment.
The markets cover 2,700 square miles, a population of 1.2 million and 364 cell sites.
