BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A man was hospitalized after the car he was driving plowed into a Birmingham restaurant.

Birmingham police Officer C. Bailey tells The Birmingham News the black Nissan Altima crashed through an intersection Saturday morning and went airborne before hitting the side of Costa's Famous Bar-B-Que and Steak Restaurant.

Bailey says the driver appears to have suffered a seizure and was taken to a local hospital. His condition wasn't immediately known.

The Nissan also hit a BMW 23 belonging to Rick Pate, the restaurant's owner, sending its hood flying into the drive-through menu board.

The restaurant had just reopened Friday after merging with a Trussville location that had closed. District manager Shirley Robinson said Costa's was cleaning up and would open Saturday.
