COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) — Three suspended Columbus police officers have filed appeals with the Civil Service Commission.

The Commercial Dispatch reports Lt. John Pevey and Officer Rick Higgins were suspended Feb. 22 for 20 days.

The discipline stemmed from an incident in which Pevey allegedly failed to properly report that Higgins' squad car had been totaled after it stalled in a deep puddle. Pevey, who recently qualified to run for Lowndes County sheriff, says he's hopeful the commission will find he's done nothing wrong.

In a separate case, Officer Heath Beard was also suspended five days for wrecking a squad car and 10 days for insubordination.

The Civil Service Commission will schedule a hearing for the officers' appeals at its regular meeting Thursday.
