New Albany product Eli Whiteside, part of two World Series-winning teams in San Francisco, was picked up on waivers on Monday by the New York Yankees.

Whiteside was not on this year’s Series roster but was the off-day catcher for the Giants’ pitching staff as they prepared for each game in their sweep of the Detroit Tigers. He also earned a World Series ring as the team’s backup catcher in 2010.

The 33-year-old Whiteside, who also played at Delta State, has played in 208 big-league games in five seasons, the last four in San Francisco. He’s a .215 career hitter.
