Phil Purdom, the senior vice president of development and mall leasing for mall co-owner David Hocker & Associates, confirmed that the store would begin construction in March. The store should open “in late spring or early summer,” he said.
The target date is sometime in May, he added.
He declined to reveal where the store will be located, however.
The nearest Express stores are in the Memphis area. Other current Mississippi locations are in Ridgeland, Meridian and Biloxi.
The company has some 600 stores nationwide.
It marks a return of sorts for Express to the mall: Express and Structure have been former tenants there. Structure was the men’s apparel spin-off of parent company Limited Brands before it was folded into Express.
Mall General Manager Jeff Snyder said Express would be a good addition to the mall.
“They’ve changed their marketing and business plan and really seemed tuned in to the latest trends,” he said. “The stores are very nice and we’re excited with their addition.”
And what exactly is Express? According to Express CEO Michael Weiss, who wrote on the company’s website, “Express is the must-have sexy, sophisticated fashion brand for work, the weekend or going out. It’s what’s new and what’s now for young fashion-forward women and men. We started more than 30 years ago as an experiment – an offshoot of another successful retail concept. There was nothing but opportunity in front of us and we took it.”
Express started in 1980 as an eight-store division called Limited Express for what is now Limited Brands. The brand reached $1 billion in sales in 10 years. In 2001, the Structure division of Limited Brands was folded into Express.
