Former Itawamba Community College standout John Gatlin was recently selected by his teammates to be a team captain for the Ole Miss Rebels baseball team this season.

Gatlin appeared in 28 games last season for the Rebels, including making 13 starts as a designated hitter. He his .255 on the season with eight RBI and five runs scored while being walked four times and hit by pitch seven times for a .397 on base percentage.

The Tupelo native was a two-time Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) All-State and All-North selection while being named National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) in 2011.

As a sophomore, Gatlin hit .331 with a pair of home runs and 39 RBI, had a 2-0 record with two saves and 2.56 ERA in six appearances and earned NJCAA Academic All-American honors.
