"Literally not a day goes by that somebody has not asked me over the last few months if I will do it," said Hewes, a Republican who served in the Senate 20 years and lost a race for lieutenant governor in the 2011 Republican primary. "I think I know the city of Gulfport as well as anybody out there."
Hewes is the first candidate to confirm he will run for the office.
