TUPELO – Girl Scouts will lead the 2011 Reed’s Tupelo Christmas Parade.

“We are celebrating 100 years of Girl Scouts,” said Emilie Hutcheson, membership manager for Girl Scouts Heart of the South. “We want to say thank you for letting us do this.”

Brownies and Daisies attended Wednesday’s announcement at Reed’s in downtown Tupelo. Hutcheson estimated that more than 500 Girl Scouts will serve as grand marshals during the parade.

“We think the Scouting program has always been very valuable,” said Debbie Brangenberg, executive director of the Downtown Tupelo Main Street Association.

The parade will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, and the theme will be “The All America City Christmas.”

“This is based on the fourth time that we’ve won the All America City Award,” Brangenberg said.

It’ll start at the BancorpSouth Arena parking lot, travel west on Jefferson Street, south on Robins Street and east on Main Street.

Girl Scouts of the USA will have its 100th anniversary in 2012. Girls Scouts Heart of the South serves more than 11,000 girls from kindergarten to 12th grade in Mississippi, Tennessee and Arkansas.

To participate in the parade, contact the Main Street office at (662) 841-6598.
