Joyner Elementary Principal Glenda Scott will replace Principal Mac Curlee, who will retire on Dec. 31. Lawndale Elementary Assistant Principal Jason Harris will be the interim principal at Joyner.
"One of the things I think Tupelo is best at is making sure they have quality administrators in every position," Superintendent Randy Shaver said. "Because we have the quality administrators, we didn't have to look far to fill those positions. We felt Glenda Scott had the skills set that was best needed at the high school."
Scott is in her first year at Joyner, a kindergarten to second-grade school, after previously serving as principal at Rankin. Earlier this year, Rankin was named a national Blue Ribbon School for the 2008-09 school year, during which time Scott was the school's principal.
Scott has 29 years of experience in education and six years of experience in administration. She was the 2006 Mississippi Administrator of the Year, the 1997 Rankin Elementary Teacher of the Year and the 1986 Lee County Coach of the Year.
amp"It will be a big job, but I have a lot of energy, and I'll bring that with me,amp" Scott said. amp"I want to be visible and spend a lot of time in the hallways and classrooms getting to know the teachers and students.amp"
Shaver said that Scott's strength is connecting individual student achievement data to the performance of students and teachers in the classroom. He said she is also a great team builder.
Harris is in his fourth year as assistant principal at Lawndale. Before that, he was an assistant principal at Columbus High School.
He came to Mississippi after working in the Norfolk, Va., school system, where he spent time as an athletic director and a dean of students.
"He also has that understanding of student achievement data and performance in the classroom and has proven himself to be a strong instructional leader," Shaver said.
Harris was 2005 Columbus Municipal Public School District Administrator of the Year and was named 2004 Outstanding Dean of Students in Norfolk, Va.
"I'm a hands-on person," Harris said. "I'm big on relationships with students, as well as with the staff and parents ... I realize I have big shoes to fill."
Shaver said that both Scott and Harris will be candidates for the full-time positions and both said they would apply. Shaver said those searches will begin in January with hopes the district can make an announcement by the end of February.
Shaver said someone in the district will fill the position of assistant principal at Lawndale.
