Tupelo High swim team member Walker Fortenberry high fives Dana Ellis, left, after a breast stroke heat at Rob Leake City Pool on Thursday.

Ellis was one of 10 Special Olympics competitors participating in the Therapeutic Challenger Sports swim team Special Olympic Splash event.

The meet was preparation for the Special Olympic State Games, which will be held in May at Kessler Air Force Base in Biloxi. Participating in the swim meet were Hadley Smith, Logan Nissen, JJ Reed, Clarence Harmon, Taylor Rosnethal, Suzette Hollingsworth, Madison Dennis, Jill Myles, Miranda Jones and Dana Ellis. All of the disabled athletes will have an opportunity to compete in the state games. The Challenger League swim team was coached to Barbara Aguirre, Stephanie Fears and Nancy McDade. They were assisted by volunteers Katie Deaton and Morgan Crowley.
