JACKSON - The state's fifth Community Shred-It Days events helped hundreds of Mississippians last week.

Events were held in D'Illberville, Hattiesburg, Jackson and Tupelo on Friday and Saturday in conjunction with National Consumer Protection Week where people shred sensitive documents for free.

This year, numbers skyrocketed up from previous years with more than 1,300 participating. The Shred-It Company, the primary sponsor of the event, estimated 61,740 pounds of paper were shredded.

In 2010, 696 consumers participated statewide, shredding 41,400 pounds of paper.
