FULTON – The Itawamba County Board of Supervisors recently agreed to pay a former jail employee for 108 overtime hours he wasn’t technically supposed to work.

The issue stemmed from a misunderstanding of the county’s personnel policy, which states that part-time employees of the county can’t receive compensatory time – that is, time away from work in lieu of overtime pay.

But former jail employee Jacob Dye said during his time as an employee, he worked more than 108 hours beyond normal working hours. County administrator Gary Franks said another part-time deputy also is owed at least 60 hours of compensatory time.

The board said in the future, department heads should be sure county policies are fully understood.
