The Lee County Sheriff's Office received a $7,458 grand allowing them to purchase 12 new bullet proof vests for deputies.

Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson said the vests are important, especially since the Lee County Sheriff's Office saw two officers die from gunshot wounds that could have been prevented with a vest.

Johnson mandated the wearing of bullet proof vests when he took office in 2004, a factor that helped his department secure the grants for the vests.

The grant payed for 100 percent of the purchase and Johnson said all of their vests have either partially or fully been covered by grant money.
