“I’ve never hula-hooped in a cafeteria before,” the 10-year-old said. “It was a lot of fun.”
Part of the Lee County School District’s celebration of National School Lunch Week, Saltillo Elementary School students twirled the hoops and flipped Frisbee disks in the school cafeteria before grabbing their meal on Thursday. The district’s superintendent and its assistant superintendent served meals in different elementary schools throughout the week, and parents were encouraged to join their children for meals. The week began with a party and balloons in elementary cafeterias.
“We wanted a celebration to showcase our healthy meals and to have fun in our cafeterias,” said Lee County Child Nutrition Director Susan Killens.
Killens said the district is also launching a 5-2-1 Fun initiative in conjunction with the Healthy Tupelo Task Force. It will encourage its students to eat five or more fruits and vegetables, have two hours of screen time or less and participate in one or more hours of physical activity each day.
