A New Albany man has answered in court for his failure to support his three children.

Stephen L. Chism, of 708 Mosshill Drive in New Albany, was sentenced Friday for felony non-support of a child before Monroe County Circuit Court Judge Paul S. Funderburk.

The judge sentenced Chism, on each of the three counts, to five years to run consecutive, suspended non-adjudication, supervised probation in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

“This means that this defendant must pay his child support in full or he’ll spend up to 15 years in jail,” said Attorney General Jim Hood.

The defendant was ordered to, and did pay, $3,000 Friday and an extra $175 on top of his regular child support payment, plus court costs.

Chism’s arrearage amount of $19,000 is to be totally paid at the end of his probation.
