GREENWOOD — The Mississippi Supreme Court has ruled that former Greenwood City Attorney James K. Littleton could not serve as a holdover appointment after being fired by Greenwood Mayor Carolyn McAdams.

The Greenwood Commonwealth reports last week's ruling upholds a decision by a local judge who found McAdams had the authority to replace Littleton when she took office in August 2009. Littleton had served as city attorney under Mayor Sheriel Perkins.

Littleton had claimed McAdams didn't have the authority to fire him and that he was holdover appointee.

The Mississippi court said the law is clear that the mayor has the sole power to make appointments to the city attorney's office.
