Jensen Mayfield, left, and Conrad Becker watch as two other Cub Scouts' derby cars compete during Pack 2627 Pinewood Derby at St. James Catholic Church in Tupelo on Sunday. Eleven Cub Scouts and their parents spent several of Sunday’s pre-Super Bowl hours wheeling their wooden creations down a ramp; racing and eliminating each other until there were only two left. Mayfield’s red vampire-faced racer beat out Becker’s multi-colored police hot rod by a hair in the final round. The difference? A lucky penny attached to the back, according to Mayfield. Cubmaster Michelle Whitenton said her Scouts will get another chance to race March 3 when they and other packs converge upon The Mall

at Barnes Crossing to determine the regional winner.
