ABERDEEN – Election officials will recount votes cast in the Ward 1 alderman race after the vote was contested over whether absentee ballots had been counted.

The recount will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday at Aberdeen City Hall and will be overseen by Aberdeen City Clerk Jackie Bensen.

Incumbent Alderman Alonzo Sykes Sr. had been declared the winner over challenger Robert Devaull, with 164 votes to Devaull’s 141 votes.

Bensen said the recount would be conducted by the Democratic Executive Committee and that each candidate had been notified as required by the regulations.

After the recount, the box will be resealed.
