• Junior lefty Lex Rutledge (Tupelo) picked up a save in Samford’s season-opening 4-2 win against Radford on Friday night. Rutledge, a preseason All-American, walked two and struck out three – including the final batter with the bases loaded – in an hitless ninth inning.

• Host Union swept a pair of basketball games from Blue Mountain on Saturday, with the women losing 80-33 to the No. 3-ranked Lady Bulldogs and the men falling 69-56.

• It’s two weeks until the debut of the Mississippi Hound Dogs indoor pro football team in Tupelo. The team entertains the Rome Rampage on March 3 to kick off their first season.
