At least three Starkville Fire Department engines responded to a house fire on South Jackson Street on Wednesday morning. Crews were called in around 9:30 a.m. after passersby noticed fire and smoke coming from the roof. Police blocked the streets around the home as firefighters battled the blaze for at least an hour and a half to get it under control. No one was home at the time. The home is a total loss, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Starkville Fire Marshal Stein McMullen said firefighters found the cat alive in the laundry room while trying to extinguish the fire that destroyed the 100-year-old home.
