STARKVILLE — The city of Starkville has received funds from the state to help with solid waste disposal rules.

The Starkville Daily News reports that the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality provided a two-year, $13,500 grant to the city.

Starkville Mayor Parker Wiseman says the money will go toward the salary for an enforcement officer.

Emma Gandy, Starkville director of sanitation and environmental services, says the city applied for the grant because it has faced issues with litter, illegal dumping of tires and other solid waste code violations.

She says the money will help the local officer not only enforce codes and reduce violations, but also educate people who may not be aware of certain codes.
