VERONA – Students at the Verona School will soon be eating better-tasting and more healthful food.

The K-4 school in Lee County will use federal stimulus funds to buy a combination oven-steamer that will add crispness to foods that are traditionally fried like chicken nuggets and fries, said Susan Killens, director of Child Nutrition for Lee County Schools said.

For the last six or seven years, the district has not fried food but baked it in a convection oven, Killens said.

The new oven will cost $33,500, plus $2,500 for installation, and is expected to be ready when students return from Christmas break.

The Lee County School board approved the money for the new stove Tuesday.
