The Tupelo Middle School Splash showchoir is offering music fans a bit of two worlds.

This weekend the all-girls showchoir presents “Sweet & Spicy,” a program half-full of sweet love songs and half-full of songs with attitude.

“It’s half-sweet, half-spicy,” said Katie Foxworthy, TMS choir director. “The first half is sweet: ‘Best of My Love,’ ‘Firework,’ ‘Lollipop.’ The other half are spicy – spunky, sassy songs, like ‘Telephone,’ ‘Proud Mary,’ ‘Brand New You.’”

The mix of songs range from disco hits like “Best of My Love” and the classic show-stopper “Proud Mary,” to newer hits like Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” and Katy Perry’s “Firework.”

“It’s gonna be a really fun show,” she said.

Of course, the show is complete with sparkly costumes that complement each set of songs.

Caitlin Gardner, 14, an eighth-grader at TMS, sings the solo on “Best of My Love,” but it’s the spicy choice, “Proud Mary,” that’s her favorite.

“I’m a big fan of Tina Turner,” she said.

In fact, Gardner said many of the spicy songs were the most fun to sing.

“People always say I’m a drama queen, so I get to show that off,” she said, laughing.

Splash is made up of 50 seventh- and eighth-graders at TMS. Gardner said the “Sweet & Spicy” show gives the younger students a chance to get a taste of what fun – and hard work – show choir is all about.

“It gives the newbies a great experience, and it gives them a lot of practice,” she said. “It’s very energetic. I advise everyone to see it. It’s really neat.”
