But having more than tripled the number of customers since 1962, the electric cooperative is looking at a bigger facility to serve its customers and employees.
“We’re looking at a new customer service center where members can pay their bills and where we can better serve them and new customers,” said TEPA General Manager Bill Long.
The Tupelo office is home to 104 employees; an office in Fulton houses another 30. But the Tupelo office is only about 10,000 square feet. Long said the new office would grow by half.
“We’re squeezed for space,” he said. “In 1962, we had about 13,000 customers. Today we have about 42,000. So we’ve grown quite a bit.”
He said the new facility would be built on the property where the current building is. TEPA owns about 15 acres on South Gloster.
As for when construction will start, Long said the association is going over the details with architects and planners.
“We’ll be making information available to members,” he said.
The cost of the project isn’t known, since building specifications are being developed.
“There’s no magic number,” Long said.
The TEPA board of directors will review the plans and vote on the project.
The final design should be ready in a few months, with the project out for bid by the end of the year, Long said. Construction should start sometime next year, with the project taking 12 to 18 months to complete.
