Northeast Mississippians not only offered their time and personal presence in the post-tornado relief effort, but they also opened their wallets.
The Tornado Relief 2011 campaign – organized by the region’s media outlets, including the Daily Journal – raised $112,845. That included $87,845 from the public at large and $25,000 from the CREATE Foundation, which administered the fund and distributed the proceeds. CREATE is the Journal’s owner.
Most of the funds were distributed to several Smithville entities.
Organizers initially hoped to raise $50,000, but when a June fundraiser at The Mall at Barnes Crossing televised on WTVA raised more than $53,000, a decision was made to extend the campaign and increase the goal to $100,000. Campaign contributions continued to come in for most of 2011.
