TUPELO – Emergency workers unloaded dog food, furniture and bamboo flooring from a semitrailer that overturned on Highway 78 Saturday morning.

The Tupelo Police Department and Tupelo Fire Department were dispatched at 7:29 a.m. for an overturned truck.

When they arrived, Lt. Brian Brown said the driver was outside the truck and in good condition but the truck’s cab was engulfed in flames.

“The fire department put it out quickly, within minutes,” Brown said.

The cab of the truck was badly burned and a patch of grass on the side of the road was burned when gasoline spilled on to it.

The driver was transported to North Mississippi Medical Center as a precaution, but Brown said he appears to be fine.

Emergency workers helped to offload furniture, bamboo flooring and dog food from the truck’s trailer so it could be towed away and the road cleared.

Brown said the trailer of the truck began swaying as the driver traveled east, causing him to swerve and lose control. The truck traveled into the median where it crashed into the cable divider and then flipped into the farthest westbound lane.

The truck was emptied by noon when emergency crews worked to right it and clear the roadway.
