The 49-year-old woman was sentenced to life in prison last Friday after a four-day trial in Prentiss County. She was transported to the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility in Pearl and was "unconscious and unresponsive" when she arrived shortly after 5 p.m. Friday, according to MDOC spokesperson Grace Fisher. Authorities "immediately got her medical attention," Fisher said.
A MDOC photograph taken upon her arrival at the prison shows Jones unconscious.
It was her second trial because the first, last October, ended abruptly when she was discovered unconscious on her Alabama home bathroom floor in the middle of the night.
Last fall, when a mistrial was declared, people close to the case said Jones had attempted suicide several times, including one time when her mother took a gun away from her.
Jones contended, during her trial, that her 38-caliber pistol accidentally went off when she and her mother, Jane Jones, struggled over it.
MDOC had an order, after her sentencing, to take her directly to Central Mississippi Correctional Facility in Pearl.
